CS GRE - How much can it make or break a profile?

I have a rather average GPA so far, and poor marks in one CS basic course which is considered fundamental by most universities. I’m still in junior year, so there is time. I’m aiming for top 20 schools for MS in CS, and am also working on getting some research experience under my belt.

Recently, I read that giving the CS Subject GRE and scoring highly on it can really boost chances for an admit from a top school. I am confident that through some rigorous prep, I can get upwards of 85-90 %ile. However, will it make a significant enhancement in my profile, or should I apply that time to getting my GPA up instead?

Get your GPA higher by doing better in CS and math courses. A higher GPA through non-related courses won’t help you much.

Edited to add: the CS GRE score can help to show that you know material, but it can’t overcome poor academic performance.
