Are there plenty of CS careers (preferably in software development) inside of Michigan (Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, Ann Arbor, Detroit, etc.) for CS majors?

I’m aware that the pay is A LOT lower compared to jobs in California due to cost of living adjustments. Does anyone know what employers pay here?

I hear GM IT has been hiring a lot recently. But other than that I can’t think of much. There’s some small firms but nothing big. If you want to work in Michigan you can probably find something, but your set of choices isn’t huge.

Google has a large office in Ann Arbor, but I am not sure what they do. I think they are mainly marketing/sales, not technical, but I could be wrong.

Subscribe to an indeed feed and maybe try to connect with a technical recruiter. Seems to me to be no shortage in this field. What are your strengths?

Google’s Ann Arbor office employs several hundred people but mostly in sales and marketing for AdWords, Google’s advertising division, which is the principal revenue source for the company. AdWords also has smaller offices in New York City and Mountain View, CA, but it’s cheaper to have most of those jobs in Ann Arbor because the cost-of-living and pay scales are lower. These types of jobs don’t require a computer science background.

Actually, someone I know (not very well) interned at Amazon in Detroit.

The big areas for CS jobs are Seattle and the Bay area, at least that’s where I see everyone going. And obviously there are some number of jobs all over the country but those are the two big areas I see people from Michigan going.

They were hiring a ton like 2-3 years ago. They’ve cooled down on hiring in the past couple of years, at least from Michigan. The big name companies currently hiring en mass from Michigan are now Microsoft and Amazon.

It should be noted that the University of Michigan is not a local or regional university. It is not even a national university. It is a global university and its students are sought after all over the world. Most non-IOE/ME Michigan Engineers do not remain in Michigan because the respective industries that seek them are located in other parts of the country. Chemical Engineers will usually end up in the Texas, California, Minnesota or other states with major companies that recruit a lot of ChemEs. EE/CE/CS majors will usually end up either on the West Coast or in the NY-DC corridor etc…For the most part, CoE majors will be recruited by those companies right on campus, so finding a job should not be too difficult.
