Which math track do you think would be best for a CS major?

I would assume applied math, but within applied math there are several tracks.

What would be better, a MS in CS and a minor in math, or a double major in CS/Math?

It depends on what area you are most interested in as far as applying CS to mathematical applications, or going into mathematical areas of CS.

Note that if you are interested in cryptography, 470, 471, and 474 would be of interest.

My S interest at the moment is software engineering.

I think what’s better is what interests him and what professors he ends up liking. He doesn’t* need *a math degree to be employable.

I know, but he likes math.

Unless he wants to open up employment or graduate study possibilities in non-CS areas where a math degree may help (e.g. finance, actuarial, math PhD or teaching credential), he can just take those elective math courses which interest him without needing to chase all of the math major requirements.

Yes, and he’ll figure out what math he likes by taking a variety of courses. Maybe they’ll fall into a natural major or minor - maybe they won’t. It’s not a big deal either way. I think deciding now what sort of math major to be is way too soon.
