C's my freshman quarter...

How bad is it go be getting C’s and D’s my first fall quarter? I’m scared of what my final grades and GPA will be. I know people say that oh this is the time to get situated into college life and find your niche and good study habits… but I am doing so badly already.

UCSD will want to see your UC GPA when applying, which only computes your grades during 10th and 11th grade.

No, not high school. I’m already a freshman at UCSD.

No, not high school. I’m already a freshman at UCSD.

^Sorry about that!

Be proactive and meet with your professors in those classes that you’re having issues. Let them know that you care and ask for suggestions on how to raise your grades. Try to join a study group, if one exists, or form one on your own. They will have suggestions for you. Sometimes the first quarter, or longer, can be traumatic. Lots of changes from your high school days, when A’s were earned perhaps more easily. Go talk to a counselor at the school if things don’t get better. You are not alone. Good luck!

C’s and D’s will be stains on your transcript when applying for grad school (if you plan on doing so) and they’ll affect your GPA for your entire college career. But… all hope is not lost! STUDY!! Give up your social life entirely until finals so you can at least pass… sometimes you can really bring your grades up during finals, depending on the class. Definitely talk to professors and/or TAs. You can do it, good luck!

is it better to drop a class with C for a W ? or just keep it…?

Hmm a W looks pretty bad for grad school, but i would think a W is better for jobs right away since sometimes they just ask for GPA.

a few C’s or a W wont kill you, just make sure its not excessive and try hard

I found it hard to tell from grades that I got on tests what the final grade would be. In some classes, I wasn’t sure I would even get a D and I ended up with a B. You might not be doing as badly as you think. Talking to the professors is a really good idea.

If your GPA matters for where you are trying to get, take the W, by all means. It doesn’t nearly look as bad as people say if you take the course again and get an A.

I wouldn’t advise getting more than one, though.
