hi guys
I’ve been taking this fall semester off from school for some personal reason. (leave of absence)

I am computer science major, and I am supposed to be a sophomore this semester.

I took CS61A last semester, but I dont have any other computer programming experience.

Well I have some time to spend till 2012 Spring.

Do you have any recommendation for what to do while out of school?

I just finished a book about C language.

I am korean, so i am looking for better grades and preparations in the future.

I just wanna hear some opinions from you guys like…

just read books and chill!
study mathematics for future computer courses like discrete mathematics!
get familiar with other programming languages such as Java!
nah, just travel around and save some money.

Thanks!

what are you doing while you’re out of school? i kind of want to take a break too because obviously, this aint workin out for me. i just dont want to move back home. i want to try to study abroad but idk what will happen with my apt.

i still want to live in berkeley though and be here with friends and make new friends.

I suggest that you try to find some kind of work experience during this time. Offer to work for free. No amount of reading can equal actually working on code.

And this is probably a good time to actually decide if you want to actually do CS in the future too.

definitely agree with some of the poster above. If you can gain some experience [work/internship/shadowing/etc] related to computer science, it would be definitely beneficial. You can also try applying for a short job (try SAT tutoring place, cashier),
a little extra money and general work experience never hurts right!

Other then that, you can always do some general volunteering and independent studying.

It’s great to see that you are not letting the semester gone to waste! good luck!!

i am just chilling everyday. but most likely i am too sad that i am wasting 3-7 hours on internet doing nothing. i am just reading comics and news, facebook-ing, and chatting online. other than that, i study for my career. For me, i am just practicing C for my future CS courses. right now, I feel like i am ready for next semester.

That would be the best thing i can do, but it is hard to get a job in korea as a sophomore college student. but thanks, i should keep lookin forward about it.

haha i dont think i am spending time well but i should spend wisely from now on. i achieved only half of my goal so far. SAT tutoring is pretty good, but my SAT score is a bit low(2050). Haha I agree, i really should be lookin for some job.

haha i would probably do the same. I really would like to take a semester off but haven’t thought much about what i would do if i did. i’d probably be bored at home anyways…or i could take classes outside of college or somethin…idk

do u live in berkeley still? u could join clubs and stuff i guess to have more ppl interaction
