CTY / SET -- List as "Honor" or not?

The Common App has a limited amount of space for “Honors” achieved since grade 9. I was told that being a member of Johns Hopkins’ S.E.T. program (Study of Exceptional Talent) is an impressive achievement, but honestly, since it was awarded in grade 7, I don’t think it really belongs in this category of the application.

Anyone know whether mentioning S.E.T. membership is a plus on a college app? If you or your child included it, how and where on the application? S.E.T. membership is listed on CTY transcripts, but not prominently.

Thanks for any insights.

Hi book, I’ve been wondering this as well. I was selected for the program after taking the SATs in 7th grade, but I chose not to attend. Pretty sure I still get mail from CTY though. Anyone think this is worth a mention anywhere on the app?

Bumping this one up to see if anyone has any thoughts now that people are starting their apps.

CTY/SET is a valuable honor but the fact that it is received before high school makes it old. If you have enough recent honors to fill all the spaces in the application, I would use the newer honors. If you don’t have enough to fill the spaces I would go ahead and list it. You can also prepare a “resume” or listing of addiitional honors that don’t fit on the form itself and attach it. I forget where you attach it on the common app but there is a place to attach something with additional honors and awards.

Good for you on your achievement. Just remember that colleges have an attitude of "what have you done for me lately?’ and they really want to know what has been going on in your life during your high school years. They want to know how you have built on your CTY/SET experience since then and the amazing accomplishments you have made as a gifted high schooler.
