Chinese University of Hong Kong or Hong Kong University of Science and Technology?

Can anyone who has studied abroad or is currently studying abroad at one of these programs tell me about your expierence? How was the social life? academic life? students?

Dabear34: and from what I have heard and know of, HKUST is more well reputed in the global sense and CUHK is a strong name in the local market… the social life at HKUST is better unless you are from Hk/China and have a good grasp of Mandarin/Cantonese… You’ll find more International students at HKUST than at CUHK… The campus, is bigger at CUHK, but not necessarily more vibrant than HKUST’s…
CUHK is more British, like HKU, with a LOT of students from Mainland China and courses in Mandarin/Cantonese, whereas HKUST American … Since students from Mainland China are selected through a very competitive admission process and are mostly on some form of scholarships, they are extremely focused on studies and so social life, not only theirs but also yours, suffers badly, same is the case with students from Mainland China at HKUST, but there are large no. of Hk and International students to make up for that…

Nick:
John Cabot is in Rome Italy, amazing place to be in, very expensive but worth it, the tuition is not very low too… small class sizes and international staff so education is good, but do remember the education will not be as good as the American Universities, and not a lot of strong and diversified courses on same campus… Their internship programs are good and very useful, however do check with them the procedure and requirements for Internationals to apply for co-op/internships… campus pretty but not very vibrant… even of you read their brochures they sell the fact that they are an American Uni in Rome and you’ll get exposure to Rome if you come, whereas a top notch Uni will not try and sell themselves on the basis of their location so much…

Saint Louis: in Madrid SPAIN, which is a better place to be in for me, that is as compared to John Cabot… Cheaper than John Cabot… Campus is more vibrant but same problem as John Cabot its small and not as vibrant and Uni like as the American Universities’… However to be honest its comparatively newer but still well reputed due to the original Uni in America being in Top100 …

Saint Louis will take you more places than John Cabot, but you need to see which one fits your individual criterion best! take into consideration finance, size of campus and Uni tradition, campus location (urban/rural/traditional/historical), diff types of courses available to add to academic diversity, future prospects, girls/boys ratio (loads of people have rated this to be an important criterion apparently!), et cetera…

Best thing to do is email the two Universities asking them if you could contact any of the current students at their Uni and ask them what they think about the Uni and how why they chose it, or even easier facebook them :)

Nick: One more thing. there is one good/bad (subjective) thing about Saint Louis: the Jesuit Tradition, whereas the methodology of educating is unique and effective, it might not be soo good if you are not Christian or religious, do remember they will have a lot of religious students and so that will be your social circle too… Visiting Loyola Sanctuary and studying about St Ignatius and his ideals will be very interesting unless you are not into that stuff…

THANK YOU SO MUCH! You have been so very helpful. You have given me more information than any one has. I thank you so very much. I applied to both universities and have received acceptance at John Cabot and am awaiting a reply from SLU Madrid. I will keep you posted on the status and what I decide. Again, thank you a bunch.

No problem mate! Its a pleasure to help people going through the process that I was in just some time ago And if nothing else at least it helps build good contacts for the future! You never know I might just end up on an exchange program at Cabot or Louis!!
Although Facebook isn’t working in China right now, but i’ll be able to access it as soon as I go to University i.e. HKUST, or Imperial, or Georgia Tech, so you can add me on there… search me as: Sarthak and look under Shanghai results…

Thanks! I will decide where to go finally after I get my official IB report 1st week July… already have my decisions: will be attending either of the following-
HKUST (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology)
Imperial College London
Rose-Hulman

HKUST has a lot of international students. I don’t know if it exists in CUHK, but there is a huge segregation between local HK, mainlanders, international, and exchange students.

Recently (or few months ago) many debates/protests about mainlanders taking up hall rooms and forcing local students to not be able to live in hall.

I’m looking at CUHK for journalism. I’m a Chinese adoptee living in the United States applying as an international student.

Here are my stats:
GPA: 3.87-3.9something unweighted (somewhere around there)
SAT: 2040 CR 640 M 630 W 770
AP: Language Arts and Composition and US History - 5s on both.
EC: Great ECs - president of a human rights club in my school, published in national news website, interned at online livestreaming network over the summer, and more.

Also, is there anything I should know about the admissions process? I can’t find much information.

CUHK also has a lot of internationals and for internationals thinking about going to CUHK, it will not be a problem for them to make friends and to have a good social life.

@lily9696 okay I see. How about CUHK’s international business and Chinese enterprise versus University of Western Ontario’s Richard Ivey School of Business? Which one is better?
