I’m going to apply to SC, but would I be a good cultural fit? I live in Georgia (but I’m not a southerner- my parents are from Michigan and I spent my infant and elementary school years in the midwest), so I really don’t know if USC has a distinctive atmosphere that may or may not suit me.

I’m introverted, not a frat-type, not necessarily nerdy (but I enjoy studying, am an engineering applicant, while I’m not a god, I’m not ugly, etc). I’m very libertarian, but I’m personally really straight-laced, don’t do drugs, drink excessively, etc (although I’m planning on not being inhibited in the dorm bedroom when opportunities arise). For reference, a party/fratty school like U Georgia wouldn’t be a great fit for me, while a hardcore difficult and somewhat nerdy school like Georgia Tech would be a good fit, if a little too nerdy for me.

Would I probably be able to fit in at USC if I were to be accepted?

I sympathize…decades ago I got into Stanford and USC and while I loved the Stanford name, the nerd factor was somewhat of a turnoff. When I visited the farm I was asking myself, these guys are pocket protector types and I’m wanting to develop into a well rounded young man. When I visited USC, I was impressed by the well rounded kids who were smart and confident. Coming from the low end of the mid part of the middle class, I believed USC kids would train me to be what I have become and I am so grateful I chose USC. USC is a finishing school in part.

rickdust, among all the different types of students who attend USC, there are many subsets which can often be seen by major. Among engineering majors, no matter which school you select, you will find many peers with similar interests, lifestyles, personalities. That’s not to say that you won’t also find many with differences, but there tend to be more serious students among engineering majors as a whole. What USC will provide is a wide range of other friends to choose as well. This campus is diverse, and offers great fits for artists, nerds, sports kids, intellectual types, and social types too. If you like the sunshine and make just a little effort, you’ll feel very comfortable.
