My son is considering a college that offers merit money based on cumulative GPA (and Sat scores). On his high school transcript only the Cumulative GPA and Unweighted GPA is listed. Does this mean that the Cumilative is the same as Weighted GPA except that is all of the high school years combined?
Well, weighted and cumulative do not mean the same thing. However, I would assume that if the transcript lists 2 GPA’s, that one is an UW cum and the other is weighted cum. Alternatively, it may be semester GPA vs. cum GPA. Since transcript layout depends upon the school, you really should ask the GC (ideally have your son do the asking).
Cumulative GPA would be for his entire “career” at the school. The school may weight certain classes differently depending on the rigor so if it’s it not designated on the transcript you will need to get clarification. If a school bases their merit dollars on an unweighted GPA and your school provides a weighted one the college will recalculate the GPA.
thanks, I will have to get the clarification from the school. I just didn’t want this particular college to not consider the honors classes that were taken. My son struggles a bit with GPA, so we are trying to decide whether or not his senior year, he should back of on dual enrollment and honors classes and just take classes that would be better for his gpa
