Recommendations:
-My StudGov adviser, who is also my AP French teacher and will be my AP English Lit Teacher (I’ve known her 4 years)
-I’m in a smaller learning program at my school, so my counselor only has 200 students, only 50 of which are seniors. She knows me really well
-The Superintendent has written my letters of recommendation in the past
-The Mayor has written letters of rec in the past for his interns

My academic profile is pretty decent, but extra curriculars are my main focus. I have a strong leadership and community involvement record–hopefully strong enough for it to be a hook. All of my main ECs take a lot of time so I think it would be fair to say that I’ve given up having a stronger rank to dedicate myself to community involvement. How do I look?

dude, your hook isn’t ECs (although those look good), it’s being a minority ethnicity with low income who’s a first generation college student from an underrepresented area.

you’re a quadruple URM! capitalize on this in your essay(s), & as long as you have decent stats, i’d say you have a great shot.

Thanks jellies19. I’d like to think I have a good chance even without milking the URM status hahaha (which I will, shamelessly).

BUMP

Hi! I lived in Anchorage for 8 years. What HS do you go to?

Anyways, if you can manage a 2100+ on your SAT and your 3 combined SAT II’s, you should have no problem getting into any school you want. Your rank, URM status, location, and obviously significant leadership make you about as much of a sure-bet as you can be these days.

if you don’t get into all of your colleges, something is seriously wrong with this world.

lol this world is unfair

Great chance at all four. It looks like you’re doing remarkable things with your life. Of course there’s the possibility of rejection at Harvard and Yale, but you’ll definitely be competitive there, which you would be even without URM status. I’d encourage you to get a teacher rec from someone who can focus specifically on how you behave\contribute\study in the classroom, just to reinforce the fact that you do have strong academics, even as you do amazing things outside the classroom. You’re definitely the kind of student that gets in at these places.

Thanks a ton everyone. I can’t believe that the class of 09 is going to be applying to college in the fall!

Cookietime, I go to East High. Where did you go?

alaska mexican…hm…just score a 1200 and your in ANYWHERE

Get a 2100 on your SAT and I can almost guarantee you’re in everywhere. Great hooks, wonderful ECs.

EHS, I’m PMing you but saw this thread so I thought I might participate here:

Even without the URM status, I’d definitely say you have great credentials as so to speak. As mentioned you may have that, but you also have great academics + excellent EC’s. When you’re not sure which hook you should use, (usually) that’s not a bad sign! (I’m also an '09er btw.) There’s no telling what college AdComs do these days, esp after the year with the hardest admissions in history, but I don’t think anyone could get much of a better combo between EC’s and academics (again fantastic EC’s) than that! good luck!

Wow, I get to say great chance and mean it. You of course need decent SATs, but being a Mexican from Alaska with high class rank and decent SATs is the ivy league dream ticket!!

lol, newyorka is that your first positive post ever? :P

but seriously…a mexican, 1st gen from alaska. i envy you lol
oh, great chance btw

Oh no, I’m right out there with positive feedback for all those why honestly have a chance in he**:)

But I’ve gotten the hang of this board and pledge to never again post to the delusional…,

WOW were you bred from day 1 to be a Harverd graduate. You got it all, Mexican heritage, Alaska native, low income, first gen! You just need like a 900 combined SAT to get into any school in the US. lucky underserving prick.

Wow…there goes one of spots at Harvard. :(

“underserving prick?” Have you seen is public service track record? You can read about it in his EC list, which just happens to be the first post of this thread  .

CCFanatic…i hope you get rejected from all the colleges you apply to. as you can see from his post, EHS09 had to WORK to get those grades and leadership positions. the ethnicity/location are a major +, but he didn’t just take that for granted.

Why is him being a URM a major part of his chances here? His accomplishments alone are impressive enough to get in with his own merits. Plus, being a URM doesn’t give out automatic acceptances, nor is a “hook” like everybody wants to believe it to be. Schools of the caliber he’s applying are flooded with URM applicants.

Just take your SATs well during senior year and you’ll have a good chance…

^ exactly what i say. but you can’t say that the fact that he lives in alaska and is a 1st gen URM doesn’t help. it’s a great bonus
