I just finished reading Gatekeepers, Inside the Admissions Process of a Premier College and when I came to the encounter that one of the characters Juliana Bentes had with Chelsea Clinton in the bathroom of Stanford University, I got a distinct feeling that Chelsea played her.
As I read of their encounter, I felt that Chelsea decided that Stanford did not need a future SJW like Juliana, so used some interesting mind tricks to convince Juliana to go over to Yale.
Now I know that sounds like a conspiracy theory, but given what is publicly known about Juliana now and what was presented in the book at that time, I am wondering if she got played very cleverly by Chelsea into not accepting Stanford?
Did any of you who read the book, get this feeling?
Oh please. Like Chelsea Clinton really was that insecure. And I seem to recall she went to college as a pre-med, with medicince and not SJW, as a career in mind.
With a total enrollment of only 16k I’m sure it was very important for Chelsea to prevent as many SJW as possible from matriculating. I heard she stalked the tours so she’d be better able to identify likely prospects.
I have read the book. I had not heard that particular conspiracy theory.
They sat in a history class together. The university was using Chelsea to actively recruit Juliana. We only know what the book tells us, but Chelsea did not sell Stanford at all, instead she gently nudged Juliana away from Stanford towards Yale. That’s strange, specially given that the book tells us that Chelsea chose Stanford over Yale.
Her explanation of why she (Chelsea) would chose Yale over Stanford if she were Juliana, seemed a little contrived to me. There’s no real discussion about the strengths of either school. I found that very odd.
Gee, I hope none of the people that I’ve gently nudged towards a school I turned down eventually appear in a book and lead to conspiracy theories.
I haven’t read the book (no interest) but there are distinct differences between Stanford and Yale and maybe, just maybe, Chelsea actually thought the other school would be a better fit.
I read the book. I think this is a figment of your imagination.
Juliana seems to want a lot of attention and wooing from the way the book describes her during her college tours. Her annoyance that “students at Harvard, did not move to make room for her as she toured the campus, and how they did not smile at her often enough” seemed a little narcissistic and petty to me. Maybe Chelsea did not like Juliana’s attitude, so made no attempt to woo her?
And Juliana was definitely interested in SJ from a young age at least the way the book describes her.
@Consolation Hahaha, likely, but I can’t shake off the feeling
@romanigypsyeyes
That’s what is strange though. The reason Chelsea gives for why Juliana may want to choose Yale is bizarre and has nothing to do with the school. Chelsea never engages Juliana in what those differences are.
One of my kids picked her college in part because of how friendly the other students were to her when she sat in on a class compared to other colleges. It isn’t the only criteria she used, and it is criteria that would not matter to some other people. Maybe she was smiling at students, and they weren’t responding (I can tell that for my kid, that would be a huge turnoff at a college). Just because it doesn’t matter to you doesn’t mean Juliana didn’t think it was important.
It’s been a long time since I read the book but doesn’t Chelsea say she chose Stanford because she wanted to try living in another part of the country? How is that contrived? Why not try living somewhere new while going to college? And what is now publicly known about Juliana?
@basil1 If that were part of the rest of the conversation about the schools, yeah, I can understand that. But here it seems like the central and only theme that is explored. Once Chelsea knows that Juliana is from CA, she basically tells her that moving away may be a good idea
Not sure if Chelsea even realized that Juliana was very close to her family!
Google Juliana and you will find out about where she is now and her passions.
Anyway, looks like so far I am the only one who got that feeling
Good to know!
This has got to be one of the most far-fetched of the conspiracy theories. I seriously doubt that Chelsea needed to “eliminate the competition” to get a spot at Stanford.
I think someone has too much time on his hands…
Chelsea kept probably a lower profile than most students while she was at Stanford to worry about competition at being SJW.

I can’t believe nobody spotted this. Next you will be telling me you don’t think that there are reptilian aliens walking amongst us. You don’t seriously believe that, do you
That would be weird
