Current Clemson Student- Any Questions?

Those are tough questions to answer. Academically, my most positive experiences have been the ability to do research as an undergrad. Over the past year I have been able to do research with/under two different professors. I don’t believe that I would have that opportunity elsewhere. There haven’t been any real negatives academically. I didn’t take any econ class my first semester (and only one my second), so I did feel a bit left out of my major for the first year. However, that was due to me AP’ing out of the intro classes.

Socially, I have loved everything. From the friends I’ve met, to the football games (my first was a night game against FSU- amazing), and everything in between. It is a lot like a big family down here, and I love that. Also, having most of the Presidential candidates speak last year on campus was a great experience.

I’m a male from VA, and I was wondering what my chances would be.

I’m applying to biological sciences. Is that a competitive major to get into?

I have a 3.52 weighted and 3.39 unweighted gpa.
I believe it is top 25% but not certain.

SAT- 640 CR, 610 M, 630 W (11 essay)
ACT- 27 (11 essay)

My GPA is on an upward trend if that matters at all.
8th - 2.5
9th- 3.42
10th- 3.84
11th- 3.83

I have taken three APs. (5 world history, 4 U.S., and 3 Eng lang)
*next year I will be taking APs: Bio, Lit, Govt, Stat,

chances? and thanks!

Quick question Mitch, I know at some large schools there are recitation classes (larger classes are broken up into smaller sections once a week with a TA), is there such a thing at Clemson?

40- I would say that you have a pretty good chance. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were denied due to an average GPA.

Pierre- Clemson does have some classes like that. I have only had one (my classes have averages~25 people), which was Comm 150, and we had a separate lab with a much smaller group. I believe that some other large classes are similar, but there aren’t many classes large enough for it to be necessary. I’m sure I missed it somewhere else, but what is your intended major?

Mitch - is it a good idea to bring a printer from home? Any need to make copies of things? I am considering buying a printer for my daughter, but I’m definitely seeing a wide range of opinions on this topic…

I’m an engineering major

Hey Mitch,
I was just wondering about how many people (%) go with one of the recommended laptops and what are the cons about disregarding the recommendation. It seems like an HP is better than the recommended Dell and comes at a better price. Any insight on this?

Thanks

XC- It depends on your personal preference. There are plenty of places around campus to print (black and white) for free. However, there are lines at some of the more accessible printers during peak hours. My roommate has a printer and it is really convenient to print papers, handouts, etc last minute. If you have an old printer (or buy a cheap one), I would suggest bringing it but I wouldn’t recommend buying anything fancy (unless you plan to do a lot of color).

jayzee- I would say about half of the students get the recommended laptops. Other then having pre-loaded software, there is really no advantage to getting the recommended one (they do get a small discount).

the only other advantage of getting a recommended laptop is that if your laptop breaks, you can borrow a recommended laptop while your laptop is getting fixed, this option is only available to people with a recommended laptop

ive been looking at the application for clemson and i dont see anything about an essay. do you have to write one to send with the app?

Ajjared, there is a spot to write a personal statement on the application. It is not required but I recommend that you write it since it may show that you are serious about wanting to attend Clemson (a lot of people blow off the essay) or it might give you an edge over people who don’t complete it.

Hello Mitch,

My daughter recently visited Clemson and plans to apply there. She has extremely impressive stats (both GPA and SAT) and is expected to be a National Merit Finalist.
Unweighted GPA: 4.0 Weighted: 5.02 at the end of junior year
SAT: 1520/2320 CR-740, M-780, W-800
PSAT: 224
AP World History: 4 We are waiting for her scores in AP English, History and Economics
IB Economics SL: 5
In addition she is a varsity athlete, active in the community, has extracurricular leadership roles and is in a college prep IB program. She plans to major in Biochemistry and is taking a 2-year IB chemistry class. She also is a web designer and has built websites for both profit and service. She knows that she would have to get a significant scholarship to attend Clemson and I am curious if you know anything about what it takes to become a National Scholar and what the current ones are like?

Thank you.

proudmom, congrats on your daughters great high school accomplishments. I’m sure she definitely would be in consideration for the NSP scholarship. Clemson is very vague on its website of what it is looking for but you should probably read through this: [Clemson University : NATIONAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM : Selection Criteria](http://www.clemson.edu/national</a></em>scholars/selection/index.html)

good luck!

I agree with Pierre- it is tough to know what exactly they are looking for. I know some people who are a part of NSP who have stats lower than you daughter, and I know others who have outstanding stats that weren’t considered. I would try to show a lot of interest in the school/program to signal she is serious about attending.

With the change over to digital television do tv’s work in the dorm rooms or do you need a cable box? Typically do students get cable or is it just basic channels?

Thank you to both of you for your replies. She is definitely interested in attending Clemson and I am also hoping that being a legacy will also help. (Her great grandfather is the Silas N. Pearman that part of Perimeter Rd is named after.) But who knows, I guess we will have to wait and see as I am a believer that she will go to the school she is supposed to go to - I lean heavily toward fate beliefs.

How does seating work for football games? I know tickets are distributed according to class (senior, junior, soph, fresh), but what if I’m a sophomore and want to go to the games with a bunch of juniors/seniors?

I guess you would have to get your tickets on the “all classes day” on thursday and stand together in line

If you join IPTAY all members (regardless of class) get tickets on the Thursday before distribution week so you can get better seats this way, just stand together on this day

Most people join IPTAY to get tickets- it allows all classes to get tickets together. Also, you can all get hill tickets on your respective days and go together on game day.

When do you join IPTAY? Was I supposed to do that at orientation? Can it be done online?
