Current Clemson Student- Any Questions?

What other schools did you look at? There is a lot to do while at Clemson, but there isn’t a lot in the immediate area outside of the school and the students. A lot of students spend time outdoors, as the surrounding area is gorgeous. Aside from watching sports, on campus a lot of students get in involved in organizations (FCA, club sports, etc).

Hello again,
I just came back from a visit to Clemson and realized that the town really is almost non-existent. I’m wondering what students do in their free time. Is it mostly just parties? Is there anywhere people go just to hang out? I’m afraid I’ll be bored, even if I am involved in clubs, it’s not like I’ll never have any free time.

Well, firstly greenville is about 45mins away. There’s usually something happening in GVILLE on the weekends, so you could always escape to there…

Also, there’s always something to do with 14,000+ undegrads on campus (a big number of whom stay on campus). We get emails almost everyday of events taking place on campus. I’ve never really heard of anyone being bored for a prolonged period of time…

Thanks :)

I’ve been doing some research and came across a club called Clemson Dancers. Also the Lindy Hoppers. Does anyone know anything about these? Are there auditions? If I haven’t had much dance experience, can I still participate? I think that, being club sports, I can be a part, right?

Mitch,

How expensive are student football and basketball tickets, and are they guaranteed for all students?

I don’t know about the dance groups you mentioned, but I know that the Rally Cats are very competitive. If there are multiple groups, I am sure that there is a variety of types/skill levels. Club sports can be very competitive though.

Football, baseball, basketball, etc tickets are free for students. Students aren’t guaranteed tickets for football or basketball (for baseball you just show your student ID and walk in). I haven’t had a problem getting tickets for any game so far. As an underclassmen, many people join IPTAY for football tickets. IPTAY is a booster club (~$40 a year) that supports Clemson athletics. For football, they have a special seating section that is likely better than anything a freshmen or sophomore could get.

Sorry for all the questions  but i have another:

What do you know about the honors college? I heard there are two different programs. Do you know anyone in either, and, if so, what do they think of them?

I heard the school is fairly laid back. Probably because of it’s location in the South(?), but being out of state, I am wondering if I wouldn’t feel challenged enough. I also know it’s difficult to get into, but is it possible for them to accept you sophomore year if you didn’t apply as a freshman?

Any insight on this would be really helpful, thank you.

No worries about the questions. As long as you keep thinking of them, keep asking.

I am in the honors college, and I know a lot of other members. There is a general honors program and a departmental honors program. Both are satisfied by taking x amount of certain honors courses. A lot of students in the honors college only stay in it because of the favorable registration times and don’t graduate with general honors. Personally, I have loved all of my honors classes. They are very small and facilitate discussion very well. The teachers they choose are usually top notch.

The people at Clemson are pretty laid back. It’s not that we don’t have as much work, but that we don’t stress out about it as much. It’s also the attitude and mentality of the students. I know a few transfers that I play hockey with, and they love Clemson. I would suggest joining a few clubs and putting yourself out there. Most students are very friendly, so you shouldn’t have a problem fitting in if you put yourself out there.

Also, how are roommates decided?

And, a random question, are there bees on/around campus?

For roommates, there is a form you fill out online and they match you from that. You can request a roommate (I did) as well.

There aren’t a noticeable amount of bees. In a few areas there are a lot of bumblebees, but they aren’t bothersome.

Are the research opportunities different between Calhouns Scholars and Departmental Scholars?

I’m don’t know much about the Calhoun Scholars program, but I do know that they have some classes and activities that are only available to them. However, I’m not sure if any of these opportunities are involved with research. For doing independent/student led research, there are honors classes and creative inquiry. If you want to research with a professor, they usually choose their students. For example, last semester I did some manufacturing trend research with a graduate professor. He recruited from a few classes and held interviews. Next semester I am taking an “econ junior honors research” course that anyone in the honors college could sign up for.

hi! i was wondering if i have a chance of being accepted im a junior at Plant High and i have a 3.3 unweighted GPA and a 4.2 weighted, i challenge myself and this first semester i didn’t do very well but im striving for straight As this next semester hoping to redeem myself, my SAT is a 1100 with the math and verbal, i have a ton of extracurricular activities i am on the rowing team and i go to a camp over the summer called NOLS (national outdoor leadership school) they are month long backpacking trips thats all about leadership and i want to go to clemson so bad but im afraid my SAT scores and grades are not going to cut it?

Are you in state or out of state? You seem to know what you need to improve. Try to do well this semester and try retaking the SAT’s. You might also want to try the ACT to see if it is more matched to your knowledge.

im out of state im from florida and i also hoping to major in agriculture

Alright. Just try to get your GPA and test scores up a bit and you should have a good chance.

Online it says the priority date to apply for the honors college is December 15. Do you think it would still be worth it to apply? I don’t have incredibly impressive stats (3.8 uw gpa and 1370 M+CR SAT) and I kind of feel like it’s too late.

You should still give it a chance. I’m pretty sure that I sent in my application (my transcripts and other information) on/after the 15th and I was still admitted to the honors college. It can’t hurt to try.

Do a lot of people go into the engineering college and find out it’s too hard? Do many people go to Clemson thinking they’ll major in engineering and then switch majors? And is the engineering college full of all the smarter kids at the school? I’m planning on majoring in mechanical engineering and I’m afraid everyone will be smarter than me and it’ll be overwhelming and too difficult to keep up.

Don’t worry about not being smart enough. I’m sure that you’ll be able to succeed at Clemson. As far as the intelligent people, they are spread throughout the different majors. I am friends with a few of the national scholar participants and only one of them is an engineering major. I don’t engineering as an unusually high switch rate, but I don’t know for sure. I do know that the introduction classes are pretty difficult (not necessarily intellectually challenging, but knowing all of the basics of engineering very well), and as they progress the classes get much more enjoyable.
