Current info on Trinity College (CT): Would a trans student feel comfortable there?

S25 is considering applying. Their planned major is poli sci with a possible minor in religion. The location, stats, departments, all work for them, but not sure the environment will be welcoming and supportive enough. I understand Trinity has been making great strides in the last decade to increase diversity. They have a 5 rating from Campus Pride, they have gender inclusive dorms and gender neutral bathrooms throughout campus. Their info online about supports seems excellent. However, we are reading very mixed things online about the vibe and culture, even from recent posts.

Has your S tried connecting with other trans students there? That’s where I would start.

Having lived in the area, I might suggest Wesleyan over Trinity for a trans student, but it’s a tougher admit.

Wesleyan is on the list. S25 is trying to expand his list of target schools in the area.

Current freshman at Trinity transferring out for this exact reason. On paper, yes, there are queer people here, and no one is saying slurs. On the other hand, it’s VERY preppy, and although my friend group is queer, there’s not many LGBTQIA+ ppl outside of that. I’m transferring out because I want to go to a place with a lot of queer people (I’m nonbinary and lesbian), and Trinity just doesn’t meet my needs. I’d strongly suggest looking elsewhere. You will find friends, and professors are super accomodating-- if you go, you will probably have a good time and be able to find friends. But, if you want somewhere with a wider queer community, I wouldn’t recommend it. Basically, a lot of people there are white rich kids that don’t know when they’re being subtly homophobic. Students act super weird when you talk about queerness-- professors are amazing though. And, although those students are the majority, they are gaining more diversity over time so you will find people. And, the gender inclusive dorms are specifically for genderqueer people, and coed dorms is a separate thing, which is really nice. IDK if this still applies but may be useful for someone else if not.
