@PKW, thank you so much! My Early Decision application for Amherst has already gone through but your reply makes me even more excited. You practically deserve a medal for all these awesome answers you’re giving!

How are the sciences–in particular the physics department? Do a lot of kids go on to graduate school and md/phd programs?

Hi, may I ask a question: I am interested to pursue both economics and computer science. I know Amherst’s economics’ department should be top-notch, but how is the CS department. Are the courses they teach rigorous and practical/current? The number of courses taught each semester seems to be a bit small, are they enough for future work in the industry or graduate-level study? Or can this be supplemented by course offerings from the five-college consortium? In addition, are there many opportunities available to do research supervised by CS professors or sponsored by CS department?
Thank you in advance for replies!

Hey
Can you please tell me if halal food is available on campus at Amherst? If no, can we cook ouselves? Will we be allowed to use a kitchen?
Thanks, awaiting anyones reply.

Seriously considering RD to Amherst, I know its a great LAC, I’m most interested in the Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought major (LJST). I’m aware that its not pre-law but it seems to have a great deal on interdisplinary elements, I am keen to weave Govt, Phil and Econ & Politics classes into a major, I’m also looking at the EPE (Ethics, Philosophy and Econ) at Yale. Anyone have any good thoughts on either program, would be very grateful for your insights and Amherst in general

Hey. Quick question. What are your chances of getting in RD if you get Deferred from ED and what can I do now to increase my chances? Thanks.

manoman, you can always write a supplemental letter to the admissions office reiterating your sincere interest in Amherst. Don’t make it overblown, stay on topic and really have some good reasons why Amherst is the best school for you, and what you can bring to the campus. If you receive any new awards or distinctions, you can forward those. Perhaps consider an interesting service project between now and March - and keep your grades up.

Other than that, open your eyes and look around at your other options. If you’re applying to Amherst, you’ve got great stats and lots of choices. Amherst is not the only school out there, there are happy, bright kids in many places, and believe it or not, there will always be some unhappy kids at EVERY campus, even “Harvard.”

Good luck to you :)

Halal or Kosher food is not generally served here at Amherst. However, that is the norm for most colleges in the U.S., so it is not something that should be a large factor in your decision to attend an American college. Regardless, the vegetarian options here are not that bad. Also, there are some halal restaurants in the area if you would like to go out for dinner sometimes.

As per your question about cooking, freshmen do not have access to kitchens for everyday use. Upperclassmen, however, have access to dorms where they can cook. Regardless, you usually will not have the time to cook for yourself simply because life is very busy here.

Hi,

I quickly skimmed through the pages of this thread, so I apologize if this question has already been asked. I have heard that there is a divide between athletes and non-athletes at Amherst. Is this true?

In general, is there any forum/blog/website/ other place to go to find info on who the good professors are, besides CC and ratemyprofessors?
