Current students: College of Letters?

I’m a prefrosh in the class of '14, and I have a few questions about the COL major.

I have strong interests in philosophy, foreign language and history, so naturally I’ve been thinking about the College of Letters. I was just wondering if there are any current Wes students who could attest to the quality of and/or problems with the COL major.

I know that the program places emphasis on the Western cannon and on Western philosophy/culture. If I majored in COL, would it mean that I would have very little knowledge of Eastern philosophy/culture? Or, to put it another way, if philosophy is my main interest, would I be better off majoring in philosophy rather than COL, if I wanted a broader range of philosophical knowledge?

Also, do you think it would be more difficult to double-major in COL and something else, as opposed to a ‘typical’ double major? (I’ve been thinking about a double in COL and Film Studies.)

I know I have quite a lot of time to think about this, but I’m just curious.

Many people double in COL and something else, since you take some of your major credits sophomore year.

I’m not in COL, but I’d recommend you look at the sample syllabi on the COL website and decide whether you think the subject matter of the classes interests you. I don’t know if you have access to WesMaps, but you could look at the course descriptions there as well.

OK, great!

Yes–I have access to WesMaps, and I’ll definitely check out the course descriptions.
