This forum was a huge help to us last year. My D is a very happy freshman at ‘Cuse and absolutely thriving. Can’t say enough good things. Lmk if you have any q’s about housing, etc and I will try to help. Mine is in Maxwell and lives in a dorm. She was selected as a leadership scholar, in a sorority, and loves it
Thank you! My son will be attending in the fall. Dual degree program at Whitman/Falk. We live in TX so he will be far from home!
My second year son’s biggest advice, go to the mixers and events they have during orientation/move in. He met several new friends at the ice cream social. He is from Wisconsin and did not know a single person there. His roommate freshman year was international from Turkey and did most of his activities with the international group of students.
Yes mine also did an on campus pre orientation program (with zip lining etc). The kids make friends super easily and tons of kids from all over. Most of my daughters friends are CA, WA, TX, Michigan,Chicago etc.
Lmk if we can help!
Hello, thanks for this,
My son got admitted this past weekend and I had a few questions.
If a male student there does not do a fraternity, is it harder to make friends?
He is looking for a school with a big sense of community and a lot going on, lots of clubs to join intermural (non competitive sports)
How is the campus food? (dining hall)
What dorms to avoid if you don’t want to get stuck in a top/high bunk bed?
Thanks, Marina
No need to go greek, and they can’t rush until January anyway so there is time to settle in. The students are all super involved, my daughters groups is in everything from dance to French club to professional frats to stem clubs to charity work. Mine loves it and we couldn’t be happier with her experience so far. Athletics are very rah rah, especially football now. Weather is rough but mine doesn’t complain much.
You can’t pick your freshmen dorm but can say if you want an open double or a split double.( Split double has a half wall dividing the room for privacy. )No bunk beds. Most freshmen end up on the mount or at BBB which are the freshmen dorms. They make lots of friends in the dorms right away.
Thank you! My daughter is a leadership scholar in Maxwell and just submitted her honors app today. We are from the South (although I’m from NY and we worked in Boston) but I think the weather is the one negative for her at this point. Can you give any insight to the sororities? She loves the delayed rush. Is it very competitive? Is there a Greek Village? We will be revisiting in a few weeks. Many thanks!!
It’s competitive but not like the SEC. No recommendations, etc required. It’s in early January, over two weekends (not during the week) I think 13 sorority houses and about 1400 rushed this year. Some girls chose to drop but I think 1100 or so found their homes. Mine has 80 girls in her new member class. They have nice houses and theres a couple Greek areas mixed in with the frats. Houses can hold about 50-60 girls each so a lot can live in the houses sophomore year, which is great because Syracuse requires sophs to live on campus.
Hi, my son will be entering Newhouse in the Fall, but we never visited the campus. Do you have any hotel recommendations? The ones near campus are pretty pricey. Maybe they jack up the rates for move-in week? Thank you for offering advice!
Yes they jack up for move in. Airport circle area is fine.
The area around campus is blah but my son says he doesnt care because theres so much to do on campus. Hes heading into his 3rd year and so thankful for the experience! We are from wi.
Ah, good to hear your son’s having a great experience! And glad to know hotel’s won’t always be so pricey. Thanks!
