current tischie willing to aswer any questions!

i’m currently a freshman who will provide a non-biased answer to any question about the residence halls, new york city, nyu, the student body, any and everything…

Hey,

I’m writing a paper on the subcultures that exist at NYU… one of them being the Tischies, and obviously you know I mean no offense when I use this term. I actually wanted to know, as a student of this particular college at NYU, how do you perceive yourself…what is a Tischie to you, what makes you different from a student who goes to CAS or Stern etc… different here being in the way you behave, think, dress and socialize with others. My paper is due tomorrow ( yea I know last minute but I just found this site) so if you could answer me by tonight that would be great. If not… then I guess I’d still love to hear your opinion on this. Thanks

ha… you’re funny.

hi Tischie,
My D is considering auditioning for NYU MT. Her current voice teacher at college said she thought she would be a good fit. She is a freshman MT major at university in Texas. My question is about vocal style. At her current university, small legit voices are preferred. Her preferred vocal style is big and belty. Her legit voice is also a big soprano sound. She auditioned at a jazz program as well as at her current university and both told her that her sound is wonderful but she must bring it into a smaller space for their programs. Her voice teacher told her that this is more of a “Texas preference” and that she would find it different in NYC. She is feeling stifled and thought she would
audition in NYC to see if she can be free to use her voice. What are your thoughts on this? Do you observe that many different vocal styles are represented at NYU or is a certain type preferred over another?

umm wasn’t really trying to be funny there but ok. Thanks for your help

i would say the main reason for her vocal teacher telling her that is because he/she is trying to simply discourage her from applying, and therefore not losing her in his program.
since i’ve been here, i’ve heard every type of voice there is. i’m guessing that she would be hoping for CAP, and in that studio there is such a range of different voices–that’s what they want.
she should audition, it sounds like she has a different type of voice–the type of voice that any musical theater company needs.
