Current UCLA Students: UCLA Academics

i’ve got a few questions…please help lol…i would appreciate answers from any current students, but if anyone who is majoring in comm could anwer too, that would be great.

UCLA grades on a curve rite? how do u like (or not like) it?

Is the course load heavy enough to be challenged but still have a life outside of school? (ie. intramurals, volunteering, work, friends)

Professors availability and class size?: I’m the kid who stays after school and comes before school cuz they need help…and asks all of the questions that other people seem to already know the answer to. (i’m a visual learner, so if its a lecture, or soemthing that i can’t picture rite away, i’ll ask questions until i am completely sure what I am supposed to be looking at and understanding).

i want to major in communications because i want to go into PR when i graduate but i’d have to apply to the major later on, which im honestly not too stoked about, but i’m not gonna complain.

I really reallly realllllly don’t want to be as stressed as i was last year trying to balance everything. I want it to be like a positive stress, where i am busy and motivated, but not wanting to pull my hairs out.

not all classes grade on a curve…i think it’s mostly south campus classes that do (math, hard sciences, engineering).

there will be plenty of time. course load is up to you, really.

at first, most of your classes will have very large lectures and smaller discussions. professor and TA availability vary, but it should be fine. if you need to see them when there isn’t an office hour, you can ask them to set up a different time for you.

Generally TA availability is almost NEVER a problem. At least for me. Professors, on the other hand, might be hard to get hold of. Whoever said that professors sit all lonely during office hours is a liar, usually its filled with tons of students asking questions.

TOTALLY depends on the class. south campus, i can imagine, would be filled up. but plenty of my profs complain that no one comes to office hours lol… which is more of a north campus thing.
TAs are generally very accommodating and understand that people often have class during their OH, so lots of my TAs have been fine with people setting up individual appointments.

True, there is usually at least one person who shows up at professor’s office hours. Sometimes, no one shows up to the TA’s office hours though. That is good for them, because they have their own work to do sometimes.

Professors are never lonely. If no one shows up, it means more time to work on their proposals.

I’ve never gone to TA office hours. Only professors. Sometimes we just sit there and talk about random stuff, it’s pretty awesome.

I’ve gone to both professors and TA office hours. I tend to enjoy TA’s more because EVERY TIME I go to office hours for my professors, it is packed full of students asking questions and what not. I was even able to sit in one of my Professor’s desk and chair while he explained stuff to us because there was simply no more room in his office for all of us. With TA’s you can chill a bit more. Me and my friends even had lunch with one of our TA’s. AWESOME!
