Current UNC transfer student here to answer questions

Hi guys. I’m bored, so I figured I’d try to help out anyone who’s interested in my university. Feel free to ask whatever you’d like. I’m a slightly older transfer student, so I have a lot of perspective since I’ve attended a few different universities before. Overall, UNC has been incredible, but the experience has been dragged down by administrative problems. Also of note, while I personally don’t care too much, it’s a little shocking how outdated and small the facilities are compared to other UNC system schools.

Ask me anything about the school, how to get in, etc.

Are students happy? And friendly with each other? My kid really wants a place that feel like community where it feels like peers support each other and are friendly and welcoming.

I think students are stressed out due to the workload, but that’s really going to depend on your major. Coming from an average NC state school, it’s definitely a lot more challenging, but not insanely so. People are super friendly, it can be hard to meet your people like at any big school, but I have zero complaints, everyone has been very friendly and welcoming.

That being said, I don’t think any large school is going to have THAT tight knit of a community so it really depends what she’s looking for. I was also looking for a strong sense of community when I originally went to college when I was 18, but I take the view now that it’s overrated. Unless you’re at a school that is so toxic, or so lovely and tight knit, it’s not going to make as big of a difference as you think. You’re still going to face the same challenges in making friends and socializing. I would not make choices based on the sense of community, strength in major, financial aid, school reputation, etc just make such a bigger difference on your day to day life But that’s just my opinion, and that being said, UNC is definitely better than average community wise for large schools.

Thank you for getting back to me! We are out of state, so it’s a roll of the dice, regardless of how good my kids stats are. So we aren’t really counting on Carolina, but are hoping it will be an option.

I sent you a PM.

Yeah OOS is tough. Only advice I can give you is that essays are extra important for Carolina. They really want you to show personality in them even more than other schools do. I had STELLAR stats (compared to Carolina averages at least) and I was rejected out of high school because nobody told me this and I wrote a very good essay that was more focused on science and not my personality. Good luck!

Hey! I wanted to ask you about my chances of getting in to UNC. I am a sophomore applying to transfer to UNC as a junior. I currently attend East Carolina University and I am from Raleigh, NC so I am in state. I applied my senior year of high school and last year as a freshman trasnfer and I got rejected both times unfortuntaley so this is my third and final attempt. I currently have a 3.91 college GPA, I am a member of Public Relations Student Society of America, I am a member of Student Government where I have an on campus job of Director of Community Outreach and Local and State Affairs Committees, I also worked for a NC senator this summer as an intern and I have made Deans list every semester. I have also volunteered for Meals on Wheels of Raleigh for 7 years and created a food drive my senior year of high school for it. I also am a legacy as my mom went to UNC and my grandpa played football there. I am applying to be a Political Science major at UNC. I also have really good essays and I got an amazing rec letter from my english professor who I am very close with and another rec letter from the senator that I worked for this summer who is currently the co-chairman for education for the NC school system. Thanks so much!

Bit of a late reply sorry, your chances are really good! However the application numbers are up crazy this year so don’t be too upset if you don’t get in. I hope you get in… let us know and I hope we will be welcoming you to campus soon.

Registration is crazy at this school, spend hours looking for classes before your window opens up, especially if you are planning around a work schedule or other stuff.

Hi! I just got in as a rising junior transfer and I was wondering how your experience has been with housing. Do you recommend on or off campus housing? Ik on campus is competitive, but I am concerned that off campus will feel isolating as a transfer. Furthermore, how has the size of population at the school been regarding academics? This may be a loaded question, but do you feel like it’s easy to make personal connections with professors and that they genuinely care for your success? I currently go to a liberal arts school w around 6000 students, so I worry about the disconnect between students and faculty at a larger school. Thank you!!

Yes you can absolutely make great connections with professors, seek out smaller niche classes and go to office hours. I haven’t found it terribly hard to connect with profs.

Yeah you’re just going to have to roll the dice with housing… I opted to live off campus.

Welcome to Chapel Hill!

Good to know! Thank you!!
