I suppose it depends on what university you go to and what your major is, but to me it seems that while the curriculum guide for any major is a recommended route to take, that’s all it is: recommended. I just went through a terrible semester where I face the possibility of having to repeat two classes (working student here who had been gone for two years trying to save up money to go back to school. The adjustment period was a shock to say the least) and taking a look at the guidelines of my major I’m realizing there is more flexibility than I originally thought. I would have to take it to my academic advisor to make sure, which I plan on doing, but there appears to be a way that I could retake the classes I did not do well in (if I have to, still haven’t gotten grades for them yet) while still being able to graduate at my expected date. Thoughts?
There are certainly plenty of ways to get your requirements in. Those guides have a lot of flexibility built in. If you did poorly in your other classes, you may be able to retake them, or take another course to satisfy the requirement. I definitely recommend talking to your adviser, though be warned, a lot of times they can lead you astray. Always question what doesn’t make sense and try and work out for yourself if what they’ve told you was correct. They’re not infallible and I’ve actually been told the wrong classes to take on more than one occasion by an adviser. So proceed with caution.
