Cussing in Brown Supplement

So, I’m working on the Brown supplement and I’m on the question that asks, “How did you find out about Brown? For example, from a person, publication, campus visit, etc?” They’re actually two kinda funny stories as to how I decided to apply to Brown.

The first: When I told my poetry teacher I was thinking about applying to Brown she gave an unexpected reaction. “Brown is the *****,” she told me. She said if she could do it all over again, she would’ve applied to Brown. My poetry teacher’s a pretty smart woman, so if she was that enthusiastic about Brown after twelve years, then there’s obviously something special about it besides Emma Watson and its Ivy reputation. The second reason (which almost ties into the first reason), is that I was thinking about Brown because, for some reason, I got it in my head that Brown was an HBCU (I think most can figure out why). Obviously, now I know better.

I want to put that as my answer but does this question even matter on the supplement? And would I have to censor the story about my teacher?

I think you should stay away from cussing on applications, regardless of the situation, but do what you feel will represent you best. As for whether or not the question matters, of course it matters - why else would they put it on the application? :)

You’re right. I just put her part about wanting to do it back over again. Thanks!

The thing is, some people will love it and think you’re expressive but others will see it as tasteless.

It’s a risk and I’m all for taking risks in college apps…but this one, I wouldn’t take.
