For the purpose of filling out FAFSA, I understand the parent who resides with the kid most is listed as the “custodian” parent…
But what about for CSS profile? do we use the parent who resides with the kid most, or the custodian parent on the separation agreement?
^^custodial parent
(can’t edit)
The custodial parent is the parent that the student has resided with the most during the previous 365 days, and is usually the same parent who is completing the FAFSA. Check carefully the school which your child is applying to as some schools require the income and assets through either the CSS non-custodial profile or their own institutional forms.
You use the same parent as the custodial parent on both the FAFSA and the Profile…the one with whom the child resides with most for the year prior to the date of filing.
On occasion…this will change because a kid doesn’t complete the forms at the same time…and moves in with the other parent.
But your divorce or separation agreement really has nothing to do with this.
thanks. Didn’t realize it.
