Can anyone explain if the IU MT program is considered a cut program or does it have juries/reviews?

Here is what the school says about cuts or elimination points during your career:

students will be expected to follow standard academic levels of progression since the B.F.A. exists within the College of Arts and Sciences. Indiana University academic standards are clarified in the College of Arts and Sciences Online Academic Bulletin. A discussion of progress is given by the Musical Theatre Committee and musical theatre students at the end of each academic year. It is the hope and intent of the Musical Theatre program that, maintaining University standards, all admitted B.F.A. students will retain through completion of the degree.

Will I have any academic advising within the B.F.A. program?
The Head of the Musical Theatre program will serve as your specific program advisor. You will also have general degree advising support from the Department’s Academic Advisor.

What is the format of vocal study in the B.F.A.?
B.F.A. students study with our faculty voice teachers each semester of attendance. There are also combined studio master classes each week. In addition to required auditions for all musical productions in the Department of Theatre and Drama, all B.F.A. students are required membership of a minimum 4 semesters in either vocal performance groups, Singing Hoosiers or IU Broadway Cabaret.

more questions? You can email the B.F.A. program at BFAaud@indiana.edu. You can also call Scott Jones at 812-856-4024.

We have vacillated back and forth whether or not my D should apply to this program. Our concern is the retention policy as listed above (and on their website).

Is there anyone that can speak about specific incidents where a student was cut from IU’s program?

My D is a senior and I have never heard of anyone being cut from the program.

You are expected to work but by all means the school and MT program work diligently with the students to see them progress and graduate and succeed. I sure don’t see it as “cut” program; our S loves the school and G. Pinney, T. LaBolt, etc. there are many off campus opportunities to perform as well as with the Bloomington Playwrights Project among them, which has loose ties to IU. I would encourage you to apply, audition; of the 11 schools our now freshman S auditioned for it was along with Carnegie Mellon the most personal, personable and caring approach to the audition and decision process. We made 3 trips including the audition day to IU and are in love with Bloomington, the campus and the program.

IU is a great school, with fantastic instructors. They are rapidly putting their program on the map. Kudos to George and crew for their vision and dedication!

Did you have any luck with scholarships for the MT program?

I did notice on the website that the showcase for senior year is audition based-does it happen very often that someone is not showcased?

MTs are all guaranteed spots in showcase. the audition is just another opportunity to gather experience in auditioning.

Thanks iumt40 - glad to hear that.

Just a word about the senior showcase - yes the seniors are selected by audition. Since the program began, there has never been an instance of a senior NOT being selected for the showcase, but it is possible in theory. It is also possible for students in drama or the music school to audition for the showcase, and occasionally (only occasionally) one of them is selected to be included. Since IU is a ‘no cut’ program, we make a commitment for 4 years (actually way beyond that) at the time of acceptance. Any problem a student has during their time here is simply worked through, like it would be at home. Since we keep the population pretty small, we are able to do that. Occasionally a student will decide that performing is not for them; we will help them with that transition as well if need be. (Sorry to intrude, but since my name was typed above the thread popped into my google search… and so I thought I would say hello.) Best wishes. -Terry LaBolt
