Cut the Cord: Recording Options

I followed the recent cord cutting discussion with interest, but it focused primarily on live streaming. I really want to cut the cord from our satellite provider, but I need a reliable way to record programs. It seems Sling allows you to record for an additional fee, but I don’t think you can record OTA channels. Other options I’ve found are TiVo, Tablo, and Amazon Fire TV Recast. The first two claim you can use their product without a monthly fee, but of course you have to pay the fee to get the most out of it, including a 14-day program guide with program descriptions. The Fire TV Recast requires a Fire stick (we currently have a Roku), but doesn’t have a monthly fee, so I don’t know how different the program guide would be. Does anyone have any of these DVR’s? If so, what do you like or not like about it? I’m just really nervous that I’ll have buyer’s remorse if I go ahead with it!

I can’t wait to see the responses. We have never owned a DVR, but would like the option of recording (other than our ancient VCR which barely works).

Does YouTube TV offer local channels in your area? If so, no need for OTA channels, no equipment, unlimited cloud DVR, excellent interface, etc. Very easy.

@OhiBro Thanks for the suggestion, but we’re trying to do this for little or no monthly fee, and YouTube TV is $50/mo. We’re perfectly happy with OTA channels, Netflix, Hulu and what we get with Amazon Prime - we just want the ability to record programs and pause live TV.
