Cybersecurity major looking for college suggestions where it's "not cold" [AZ resident, 3.64 GPA, 1170 SAT, <$30k]

Christian Brothers → Christian Brothers University - General Education Requirements

I wouldn’t mind taking that World Religions class or the one that talks about Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia. But the kid said, “Absolutely not.”

Letourneau University → General Education and LETU Theology and Vocation Core Requirements - LeTourneau University - Modern Campus Catalog™

Also in the “no” list would be any college like GCU that has restrictions about having people of the opposite gender in your room with you without the door wide open. Or colleges like Point Loma Nazarene University that have mandatory chapel attendance for undergrads. Thankfully, there’s a boatload of colleges that are not in those categories, so D26 has plenty to choose from. She isn’t anti-religion, just doesn’t want to be forced or required to take a religion class in college.

I don’t now about the AZ campus, but the Florida one gives a lot of aid to female students. There was a student on CC a few years ago and she was a top students (maybe NMF?) but needed a lot of aid and in the end picked ERAU (Daytona) because of the offerings and the money she got.

I think someone mentioned Marshall up thread but wanted to point out they have begun construction on new cyber security facility. Already using the nice, new engineering building they are upgrading and partnering with govt.

Huntington might have some of the most moderate weather in WV too. Not in the mountains. It was 70 this week for a little while.

Very affordable too.

Specifically on the budget front, if she’s willing to work for the government post graduation, there are some extremely generous scholarship programs. Something you might have her explore in more depth.

Visited U of A today w/D26. Attended an info session w/an admissions person in the College of Applied Science & Technology. REALLY glad we went to that. Learned a lot of really helpful information. We were impressed. They have really good post-graduation job placement in both the government & private sectors. It’s definitely in D26’s #1 spot right now on her list.

One thing (among many things) that was mentioned was the Defense Civilian Training Corps, which U of A Cyber Ops majors are eligible to apply for. Other than U of A, only 3 other colleges participate in this (Purdue, Virginia Tech, North Carolina A&T University).

I would swear I saw a question from someone yesterday asking if the CAST admissions recruiter/presenter mentioned anything about the recent US federal government hiring freezes and its impacts on internship & post-graduation employment. The admissions recruiter DID talk about it. No one asked about it, but she brought it up herself and said that the FBI appears to still be hiring and there was still plenty of open opportunities in the private sector also, so she wasn’t too concerned overall.

I was really impressed with the recruiter’s knowledge of the cybersecurity hiring options. She seemed to really know her stuff and sounded like she’s pretty skilled in helping the college students in the program get internships to assist later on with full time employment after graduation.

It was a lot more than a cursory mention of “Oh yeah, the university has a career center and you can go there for help and there’s some job fairs.” It was a lot of “Let me show you specifics of all the ways we help OUR students in THIS college get a job.” :+1:

Thank you so much for sharing the details from your D’s visit to U. of A. I really appreciate how you share details of what you learn from different resources so that the rest of us can benefit!

Has your D thought about U. of North Texas? Seems she would stand a good chance at getting a sufficiently large scholarship ($1k or so) to then qualify for in-state pricing. It’s a residential campus and would be pretty convenient to your other D, I believe. It doesn’t have all three CAE designations like U. of AZ and UTSA, but it does have two of them (research and cyber defense).
