Cyclosporiasis - Yikes and Yuck!

Was any of the contaminated lettuce identified as having been grown in the US? And there is a difference between using non-potable water for irrigation, and using sewage for irrigation.

Just as an FYI and if you’re curious

This justifies my skipping healthy fruits and vegetables and eating Nutella with a spoon out of the jar instead

It seems like maybe hydroponic and greenhouse grown are less likely to be contaminated? I just can’t bring myself to stop eating greens, because I actually really like them. I don’t have room to grow them in my kitchen.

I know, but I was nervous about eating uncooked produce. I am a cook, not a baker, but I can eyeball a crisp unlike other baked desserts.

If you have any doubt that cyclo is over hyped, please read this article. This is the county I grew up in.

Note - The is an opinion article. It includes mentions of administration policy… which should not be discussed in this thread. I posted it here because it has helpful informative general info.

So if you are taking this seriously, what are you eating thst is uncooked? I just bought bananas today and ate a kiwi made in New Zealand. I’ve read there is a lettuce grown in greenhouses in MN called Revol Greens. I’m still scared to try them out.

Locally grown food not in the big farms systems seems much safer. We go to the Farmer’s Market and the local co-op and get food grown by people we know.

We have been buying lettuce from the local farm ( only opened late in the week ), and the local supermarket that sells greenhouse grown. No issues.

I’m Not eating any of it, since they’ve pinpointed from the thousands who have gotten it back to Taylor farms. Plus the fact in the past, they’ve had other recalls.

let RFK have a nice big salad and veggies from there.

excerpt -
Yikes. What steps can people take to stay safe?

Alice: First, check your fridge. If you purchased Marketside bagged iceberg or shredded lettuce from Walmart recently, throw it out. Those products were part of a recall of potentially contaminated iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms. Taylor also sent the affected lettuce to a number of food service distributors and establishments, including Sysco and Taco Bell, but the company says it is now off the market.

Second, health officials recommend purchasing whole heads of lettuce, removing the outer two to three layers and rinsing the inner leaves well under running water. Bagged lettuce is more vulnerable to contamination, as it might have been washed with contaminated water.

Can we return to the raspberries? They’re a big part of my mornings. You wrote so chillingly about how they’re a tantalizingly ‘sticky’ host for the parasite. Am I done with them for the foreseeable future?

Alice: Based on what we know so far, experts doubt that berries are to blame for the current surge in cases. But if you’re worried, you can consider going with locally grown. That won’t eliminate your risk, but likely reduces it a lot.

I have to admit that I haven’t changed my eating at all but I’m washing things much more carefully. Thankfully it’s the summer so most of my produce is coming from the local organic farm or my own veggie patch.

I’m taking a roll of the dice eating out though as I am still eating salads. No iceberg though for me so hopefully if that’s the source I’ll continue to be OK.

The outbreak keeps growing, even though it was supposedly over. It’s really spreading across the country. What bugs me is the emphasis is on Taylor Farms lettuce - but they fail to name all the private brands that sell TF lettuce under their own name.
