My great uncle served on the USS Satterlee that day near Point du huc… God bless all who served. Keep the memory alive.

I think it’s important to remember we were already in Europe. We attacked N. Africa (Operation Torch) in late 1942 and invaded Sicily in July 1943. We then landed at Salerno outside Naples in Sept 1943 and of course Anzio outside Rome in January 1944. We had over a year and a half of fighting in Europe by D-Day, much of it horrible stuff in Italy.

It’s also important to remember that by June 1944 in the Pacific we had invaded Guadalcanal in August 1942, took Tarawa in November 1943 and invaded Saipan, which was a huge battle, on June 15, 1944, only 9 days after D-Day.
