D has been accepted as a spring 2011 junior transfer/housing ideas?

D will likely be transferring from her current school in spring of 2011; she’s just been accepted at UGA and knows the importance of arranging housing as soon as possible. She will be on an adventure semester starting tomorrow and will not have access to a computer until the end of November, so I am handling her logistics.

Should she sign up for oncampus housing, or is that not done for juniors?

Alternatively, does anyone know of someone who will need a roommate in an apartment near campus for the spring semester? Do you have suggestions as to how I might find out such information? Thanks for the help.

dg5052: My D is just a freshman this year, so I don’t have a lot of useful information for you. Not to be a stalker, but I saw from previous postings that your D is a studio art major (assuming this is the same child). If so, maybe contact the art dept. That would be a good place to start. UGA is a big school, but being part of a smaller dept makes it feel a lot more mangeable. If they don’t have any recommendations, I’d advise to go with campus housing over an apartment with complete strangers for the first semester.

I believe that the East Campus dorms have more upperclass students in them and that would be very convenient to the art building. My D’s dorm couldn’t be any further from the music building and that makes getting to her 8am classes interesting.

Hopefully some of the older students will chime in with helpful advice.

Good luck!

Thanks, somewhere. Hope your daughter is having a good experience. My D has identified the east campus dorms, and it will be my job to sign her up at the crack of dawn on Oct 1. I will also suggest she contact the art department–an excellent idea.

My son’s a Freshman and he got into O House (Oglethorpe). He loves it there. Suite style living and adjacent to Oglethorpe Dining Hall.

Since it’s her first year there, I would suggest living on campus. The East campus dorms are the closest ones to the art building. In addition, there’s a new dorm in the same area that’s part of the Reed Community, Building 1516.

Living off campus might actually be cheaper though (if you consider adding the cost of a meal plan), so you might be interested in looking into that. Most apartment complexes have roommate matching services. It might be a little risky, but if you don’t know anyone, I guess you don’t really have a choice.
