D on Transcript

After a rough year, daughter ended up with a D in precalculus and a C in health. Prior to this, she was mostly a B student with some As mixed in. School didn’t open until second semester, and that was for just two half days. Never went to full day schedule. GPA is still a 3.3, and excellent test scores. How will this impact her admissions? Not applying to overly competitive schools (Marywood University in PA, University of Hartford in CT).

It will be a common problem, kids struggled with pandemic limits on school. Mental health important in larger scheme of things.

Have you considered summer school or tutoring for precalc to prepare for next math class?
See how math placement is done, depending on major, may need to consider whether she would need to repeat algebra or precalc in college.

“ Camp Khan: a month-long, 15-minutes-a-day math challenge!
Summer is for passing time creatively with friends and family, trying new things, and recharging! We know many parents want their kids to be away from screens and devices this summer. We want to help your family stay as device-free as possible while also taking care of any unfinished learning your children may have in math.
Camp Khan is a FREE 30-day challenge for your children to complete 15-minutes of math each day from July 1st through July 31st. Our program will focus your child on the exact math skills that matter the most, setting them up for success in the next school year. After the 15 minutes of math are over and the device is tucked away, we’ll provide you with some fun activity ideas, boredom busters, and lots of chances to win cool prizes. ”

She’ll get into both of those schools, and with “merit” aid. In addition, you’ll probably be able to negotiate her tuition lower. Not to worry.

She probably could shoot higher. She can note in the “how I spent my pandemic vacation” section of the Common App that she does much better in a traditional, in-person setting for education, which her past record and excellent test scores support. Plus if she has good grades for first semester of 12th grade, it will confirm this for the colleges.

Thank you for your input and ideas! Very helpful.

Your daughter should be admitted to both of her target schools. Nevertheless, she should consider sharing a brief explanation on her applications regarding the “D”.

Web-Based Are You Ready quiz/reviews is a set of free online placement tests that can be used as a tool for students to get an idea of where they stand with math, and what topics they may want to review before taking a math course in college.
