What does it mean if a D3 Coach says “you’ll be put on a list of prospective student athletes?” Is that any help in admissions or is it merely a front by the coach? Of course it’s not the same as a likely letter, but I am trying to interpret the meaning of this statement. Cheers!
You can ask in the Athletic Recruits subforum (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/athletic-recruits/), but to me it sounds exactly like it sounds.
They put you on a list of prospective athletes. There is no evaluation of how good you are.
It depends on the school. At some D3 schools, if you are otherwise qualified you’ll get in. At other D3 schools, being put on a list is just a slight advantage or may not help at all.
You have to know how competitive admission to that school is.
Politely ask. My child heard the same thing and asked for clarification. The coach replied that he has a ranked list of applicants he wants, based on the team’s needs. He disclosed her number on the list and how many the school typically gives him, but there were no guarantees. This was RD, not ED. (She got in.)
RD vs ED can also be a factor. S’s coach said he would put S on list but it really only helps in ED.
Are you a senior in High School right now?
Depends on how hard it is to get into the school. If it’s a selective enough university where a coach’s word might matter then they are used to having kids just come out and ask for clarification.
