D3 chances for tennis player, no FA

Hi everyone, currently a sophmore in HS and wanted to get some idea on my odds. I currently go to a “prestigious” boarding school in the northeast, last year ranked highly in the Nation. My school regularly sends kids D1/3. Last year I played on low end of varsity roster. Currently, my utr is about a 7.5, and gpa at about a 3.75. I don’t play many tourneys as I am away from home most of year, but train a decent bit. I am hoping to play much more this year. I was wondering what my shots were for schools like Bates,Colby, and NYU. Also, I was wondering when I should start reaching out to coaches? Any advice is appreciated, don’t be too harsh, thanks!

First 2 steps, speak with your boarding school college counselor and your boarding school coach to review your goals and get their feedback. They will be the best resource to assist you with the recruiting process (if you are recruitable), develop an timeline and help make a right fit college list.

High academic D3 tennis is mostly reserved for top high school players and ranked players. If you are a low 4.5 (UTR 7.5), it will not be easy. Likely you will be competing for the very last spots at schools like Bates, Colby, and NYU. You should start with a conversation with your own coach IMO to get an understanding whether you might make the cut. Good luck.

You’re on the right track! Reach out to coaches now with your UTR and GPA, and play more tournaments to boost visibility. Schools like Bates, Colby, and NYU could be great options. Good luck! :tennis:

Agree that your current coach is the best resource on this, but it looks like you are on the right path. With a 3.75 from a top BS, you are unlikely to fail a pre-read, so this will all come down to whether the coach wants you.

Given you are a sophomore, you have time to bring up your rating and visibility through tournament play. Look at current rosters to see what level players those schools have. Your goal will be to be one of the top players in the recruiting class at those schools.

Reach out to coaches at those schools as well this spring as your season concludes to introduce yourself and your accomplishments and learn what they are looking for.

I just looked at the UTR of some kids who played with mine in middle school who are attending not highly ranked LACs. They range from 9-11. You have plenty of time to get yours up but not sure a 7.5 will get you recruited

You would need to show substantial improvement to be a recruited tennis player even for D3. Unlikely, but possible.
