EXETER — A York, Maine, man who allegedly took his anger out on a referee during a youth hockey game has been charged with simple assault. Exeter police on Feb. 9 arrested Stuart Santoro, 46, of 122 Cider Hill Road, in connection with a Jan. 24 incident that occurred during a York Youth Hockey game at Phillips Exeter Academy. …Investigating officers learned that Santoro, the parent of a player on the York team, had allegedly assaulted the game’s referee. Police said Santoro punched the referee after verbally abusing him about the game. “He didn’t like the referee’s call on the game,” said Exeter Police Chief Richard Kane.

While this is the first incident of its kind in Exeter, Kane said, he has warned York Youth Hockey that he expects no repeat incidents. “We refuse to have a problem in any of the rinks,” he said…

…Officials at Phillips Exeter issued a trespass letter barring Santoro from academy grounds. He has also been suspended by the Seacoast Hockey League, Kane said.
