Damned with faint praise

What a funny coincidence. My daughter had asked me to read some comments from a teacher on a paper she had written (because she could not read the writing) so she could figure out what to improve on the next time (it was a high grade but not what she usually gets on written papers). After quite a struggle reading the comments I remarked that it was ‘damned with faint praise’ which she had not heard before. Then today i came across this article about Romney endorsing McCain and it used the same phrase - which I have not heard in quite a while. It made me laugh so I thought I would share.

SCM - I have occasionally used the phrase myself, but ONLY aloud. I thought it might have been spelled “feint” as in false, not faint. So as not to embarrass myself, I avoided it in print. Perhaps the beauty is that both spellings would work.

I’m still not sure which is correct - so I will continue to avoid in print.
