Just curious - How many of you CC’ers made it through college listening to Dan Fogelberg’s sad but poignant lyrics? His albums (yes, real vinyl) got me through many nights… So sorry to hear of his passing.

56 years old…way too young to die!

I had least one, maybe 2, of his albums during college years. I really liked his voice.

He will be missed. We played one of his albums last night after hearing of his passing.

I don’t think I could find any of my albums anymore…

So sad. Have all but his last album…on cassette tapes. Haven’t run the cassette deck in YEARS—but still have it hooked up to the stereo. Used to know most all the words. During residency, we were able to bring tapes to play in the OR. I learned to operate to Dan Fogelberg and Cristopher Cross. I found their music to be calming.

I loved Dan Fogelberg, and am always particularly reminded of him this time of year as every radio station plays “Days of Auld Lang Syne”. When I was in college, and was probably breaking up with my then boyfriend, we used to always say maybe it would happen to us. I doubt we live in the same state anymore (maybe not the same country).

Anyway, I saw Dan Fogelberg in concert twice, and I believe the last time I saw him, I was pregnant with my now 21-year old daughter. I’ll have to go dig up my old albums.

Re- Christopher Cross - yep, about the same era. He played Austin all the time… the kind of concert we’d pay $3 to go see at the time before he hit it really big.

I had such a crush on him. I saw him when I was in law school - sat on the second row. Saw him again about 20 years ago. I tear up every time I hear “Run for the Roses.”

Netherlands lyrics

High on this mountain
The clouds down below
I’m feeling so strong and alive
From this rocky perch
I’ll continue to search
For the wind
And the snow
And the sky

I want a lover
I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things that I
never have done.

Sunny bright mornings
And pale moonlit nights
Keep me from feeling alone
Now, I’m learning to fly
And this freedom is like
Nothing that I’ve ever known

I’ve seen the bottom
And I’ve been on top
But mostly I’ve lived in between
And where do you go
When you get to the end of
your dream?

Off in the nether lands
I heard a sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
And deep in my brain
I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings

Anthems to glory and
Anthems to love and
Hymns filled with early delight
Like the songs that the darkness
Composes to worship the light.

Once in a vision
I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
My choices were clear
Yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go

One road was simple
Acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
When I made my decision
My vision became my release.

Godspeed, Dan. You did good.

cur - just reading those lyrics gave me goosebumps.

Scarecrow’s Dream was maybe my favorite. Gee. Imagine that. ;)

We danced to “Longer” at our wedding. I have all the vinyl and some of older albums on CD. The muse lived in him.

Scarecrow’s Dream

Seldom seen
A scarecrow’s dream
I hang in the hopes of replacement
Castles tall
I built them all
But I dream that I’m trapped in
the basement.

And if you ever hear me calling out
And if you’ve been by paupers crowned
Between the worlds of men and
make-believe
I can be found.

Plans I’ve made
A masquerade
Fading in fear of the coming day
Heroes’ tales
Like nightingales
Wrestle the wind as they run away.

And if you ever hear them calling out
And if you’ve been by paupers crowned
Between the worlds of men and make-
believe
I can be found.

Garden gate
An empty plate
Waiting for someone to come and fill
Scarecrow’s dreams
Like frozen streams
Thirst for the thaw
But they’re running still.

And if you ever hear them calling out
And if you’ve been by paupers crowned
Between the worlds of men and
make-believe
I can be found.

Oh nooooooo. I loved Dan Fogelberg! So sad- so young. Heard him in concert when I was in grad school-- small intimate venue. Wonderful concert. He will be missed.

wow… just listened to several songs I had not heard in years and years. Certainly brought back some strong memories. I’d forgotten how much his music resonated with me during that time in my life.

Fogleberg was my link to the normal when my life was all edge, no center. I hadn’t slept in 3 years and hadn’t been sober in most of a decade at the time Netherlands came out. Melodic, familiar, beautiful. I played it a lot on my Yamaha stereo. It calmed me. Well, as much as I could be calmed.

I had $100 a month payments on my stereo while I paid $25 a month for my share of the rent. Priorities, you know? I worked 36 hours a week and went to Law School full-time year round. My stereo cab was a whiskey barrel with two sections of two by ten across the top. I was a classy guy. One night after an exceptionally brutal party a burglar broke in and tried to steal my stereo, and left it in a tangled heap on the ground. Somehow the evil bastidge had managed to put my inside-out Levi’s and one sock underneath all the carnage. We never caught him. ;)

I’ll never forget the Netherlands album - listened to that over and over. Thanks for the lyrics, curmudgeon.

Two of my favorite singers of all time, both wonderful songwriters whose songs always tell a story, both involved in humanitarian and social issues, both lovers of theatre, both died far too young. Many fond memories. Harry Chapin and Dan Fogelberg. So sad to hear the news last night about Dan.

I too went to college with Dan Fogelberg. My favorite album (and we still have them all from the 70’s) was “Twin Sons of Different Mothers” with Tim Weisberg. Good times.

Cur, you sound like my husband - his stereo was worth more than his car (which wasn’t really saying much).

Rest in Peace

I think my favorite album is “Souvenirs” but there are so many songs that bring back memories. I read “Still Life with Woodpecker” by Tom Robbins until the book fell apart and I loved that Fogelberg wrote a song referencing the book.

When I saw him at William and Mary Hall, he started a song with his guitar and some folks were talking and he stopped and said, “When you’re ready to listen, I’ll be ready to sing.” You could have heard a pin drop after that and we’re talking thousands, not hundreds.
