Dance DVD question

My son has yet to film the dance DVD. He is a novice dancer and is not sure what a 90 second dance DVD should look like. He knows the basics, but is not a “dancer”. Time is ticking as he will audition in NYC. At this point I’m worried that he should just cancel the audition. Any suggestions are very appreciated!

entertainer - do the requirements indicate what needs to be in the 90 seconds? Some ask for a choreographed number others want techniques, I’m not familiar with Ball State. Does he know a dancer or dance instructor that can help? My S is helping one of his “non dancer” MT friends today record his dance prescreen its probably your best bet.

Thanks MTMajorCook. I’m writing from an iPhone so forgive me if the response is garbled. The instructions say a 90 second dance performance in your preferred style. Son does have a friend who will help him, but it may not look too polished. 90 seconds seems like an eternity all the sudden:).

Whoa! I’m confused about this Dance DVD! Until I saw your post, I knew nothing of this…and am still confused. (My son is auditioning in Chicago at Unifieds, where they have a 2-hour dance call.)

So, I went to the BSU website and clicked on the link I used to sign him up for Unifieds. This is what it says on that sheet that we sent back to them with the requirements listed below:

(Unified) AUDITION REQUIREMENTS, MATERIALS and DEADLINE DATE:

Requirements:
BFA Acting: 2 – contrasting one -minute monologues (have a third prepared)
BFA Musical Theatre: 1 – contrasting one -minute monologue (have a second prepared)

**must provide own accompaniment and portable stereo if auditioning in New York or Las Vegas. If auditioning in Chicago please bring a copy of your music to the audition and/or send it to the department two weeks before your audition date.

Materials: Theatre Resume, 8x10 Head Shot, Letter of Recommendation from someone who knows your performance/theatre work best, this completed Unified Audition Request Form.

No 90-second Dance DVD mentioned. So I kept clicking around, and found another .pdf file under Theater Audition request form (which we did not use, and had not seen until now):

AUDITION MATERIALS
BFA audition requirements
Theatre résumé
Head shot photo

Musical Theatre option
One music selection of contrasting styles of 16 bars
One one-minute monologue
If auditioning at a National Unified location, bring a DVD (or provide a web link) with a 90-second solo dance performance of your preferred style

Acting option
Two one-minute monologues
On-campus audition accompaniment provided
Provide your own accompaniment if attending a National (Unified audition (at New York, Chicago or Las Vegas
This completed request form

AHH! There the DVD is mentioned-- But why under a different form? The information conflicts with the first form mentioned.

I emailed Andrea Sadler regarding the Dance DVD. Hopefully I’ll hear back from her within a week.

Anyone else have any insight? Dance clips we recorded in October stunk, and I would need to put something new together ASAP.

Ooh. So glad you did this homework! I do think I have footage we could use from prescreens for unifieds… I will be waiting to see what you hear from Andrea Sadler.

I just doesn’t make sense to me WHY they would need this DVD-- There’s a 2-hour dance call at Unifieds. I could understand if, say, CMU wanted this DVD-- They’ve done away with there dance call but could use the DVD in case they needed a “tie-breaker” or something like that.

They said nothing about this dance DVD in a prior email:

You have been scheduled for a Unified Audition in CHICAGO on February X, 2014 at XX for the Musical Theatre option. This audition will take place at the Palmer House in Chicago, and we will send you more detailed information including the specific audition room closer to the audition date.

Please have 2 16 bar cuts prepared and a one minute monologue. Bring sheet music with you, as we will have an accompanist in the room. The dance call will take place from 5:30 - 7:30 PM.

SU88BFA - Thanks for e-mailing Ms. Sadler! Just to make this a bit more interesting, I just re-read the e-mail my son received regarding his audition in NYC and a dance call is not mentioned at all or that there would be a accompanist.

*Regarding Accompanist on site the Ball State Audition instructions page of their website it states:

“Applicants auditioning in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles will need to provide their own accompaniment via CD/Ipod recordings. Students will also provide their own sound equipment.”

So now I’m really confused

I had noted on my list that a DVD would be needed but had to search around the forms to find where I had read it (had sent the audition request form without making a copy).

I wonder if they have some older documentation on the website? It’s the only explanation I can come up with for the conflicting info. Does anyone know if they had a dance call at unifieds in the past? Maybe that’s what the video was for. We will be prepared in either case for an accompanist or not, because of other auditions. I am interested to hear what you find out from Andrea!

I heard back from BSU:

NO DANCE DVD NEEDED!! (At least if you are auditioning at Chicago Unifieds!)

Email from Andrea at BSU MT office:
There is no need for the dance video as you will attend the dance call. I need your headshot and resume in advance and you can bring your music to the audition. I do not need it in advance. We will have an amazing accompanist on site for you and she will be fine with seeing your music that day.

Not sure about NYC Auditions… I specifically said he’d be in Chicago.

Son just sent an e-mail to Andrea Sadler to ask about Dance DVD/Dance call. I re-read the e-mail confirmation he had received earlier, and it notes he should bring his mp3 accompaniment.

Son heard back from Andrea Sadler very quickly.

For NYC, BSU is working on setting up a dance call, but to bring the DVD just in case.
Son is setting up a schedule with his friend who will help him put together a performance to film.

Hey Guys!
Sorry about all of the confusion!

Here’s the situation with unifieds-

If you are attending the CHICAGO Unfieds there’s a dance call every evening from 5:30pm-7pm. You will need to attend this on the same day that you are seen for your vocal and monologue portion. However, if this is not a possibility PLEASE let us know and we will work to see you on another evening.

If you are attending the NEW YORK Unifieds, there will be Dance Auditions both the 25th & 26th from either 3-4pm OR 4-5pm. Please attend either time that is convenient for you. IF YOU CAN’T MAKE THE DANCE CALL- please bring a dvd recording of your dance abilities. We understand that we are seeing students of all dance calibers and this video should just show us how well you can move and what level of dancing you are at.

If you are going to be at the LAS VEGAS Unifieds- You will need to provide a dvd.

Hope this helps!
Let me know if you have any other questions!

Yes, it helps-- THANKS!!

kylerkays - Hate to run this into the ground, but my son will be at the NYC Unifieds and will attend the dance call, so he will not need to bring the DVD? Thanks!

entertainersmom-

You are correct! If he comes to either dance call on either day, you will not need to provide a dvd recording. There will be cameras recording throughout the dance auditions that we can go back and reference to if needed. :)

Kylerkays-Thank you for your patience! Received the Ball State e-mail that reiterated your previous instructions. Son was to film the DVD last night, but the e-mail arrived in time so I could (in my mind!!) know the DVD would not be needed. Thanks again.

entertainersmom-

Yes, of course! I apologize for all of the confusion!
If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Break Legs! :)
