I am wondering what dance opportunities Carleton offers. I see that there is a program called Ebony II, but that seems to be too informal. It looks like it is advertised for students to join the club despite their dance experience. I would not be too interested in that. I also saw a few ballroom clubs. I am not a ballroom dancer, so that would not work for me.

Did I miss an organization that I may have been what I was looking for? I have been dancing all of my life and I do not want to give it up quite yet (if I go to Carleton).

PS: I am not looking to be a dance major. I just want dance as an activity in addition to school.

Yes actually! There is a group called Semaphore that does dance at a much more serious level. Their description on the website is as follows:
“Semaphore Repertory Dance Company provides advanced dance students with an intensive opportunity to develop as performers in professional level dances. Skills to be honed are: the dancer as “tool” and contributor to the process of art*making; defining individual technical and expressive gifts; working in a variety of new technical and philosophical dance frameworks. In addition to regular training during the academic terms, participation in a “preseason” rehearsal period before fall term is required. A few pieces of student choreography will be accepted for repertory. The group produces an annual concert, performs in the Twin Cities and makes dance exchanges with other college groups.”

Carleton also has a small theater and dance major, so I believe there are several courses offered as well.

Is the Semaphore Repertory Dance Company created for dance majors? I am looking into pre-med, and I do not wish to commit myself to a dance company; it would not be making proper use of my time. I know that some schools such as Bowdoin have a club called Arabesque that requires dance experience, but it is not major-committment serious.

I’m going to go ahead and say no, since a dance major is not normally offered at Carleton (it’s possible, but you’d have to apply for a special major). So the dance company being exclusive to dance majors shouldn’t be a concern.

Check out this site: [Carleton College: Theater & Dance: Guide for New Students](http://apps.carleton.edu/curricular/thea/Guide_for_New_Students/)

Does anyone have any idea of the committment of this program? ex: number of days, hours, etc

“The group rehearses 10 hours a week and frequently works with professional choreographers. The rigorous schedule, combined with the company’s penchant for including student-directed dances in its performances, gives company members a well-rounded and advanced experience in dance, Howard said.”

No… definitely not what I am looking for…
