Dance shoes

Does anyone recall if UArts sends out a list of dance shoe requirements before hand for MT majors?

You will need ballet shoes (toe shoes optional, ballet classes for MT students have little or no pointe work), jazz shoes and good character shoes with about a 2 to 2-1/2 inch heel in which you can really dance (many students, if it is within their budget, get La Duca character shoes with the soft sole). Tap shoes are also needed but mandated tap classes don’t start until sophomore year, if memory serves me right, however some students drop in on tap even if it is not in their schedule.

Oops, was on autopilot when I responded and gave you a response from the perspective of a female student. Basically the same deal for guys, though I don’t think your son will need to worry about 2" heels for his character/stage shoes  . He will need footwear for ballet, jazz, tap and on stage. My daughter has stage/character shoes in both black and beige because of costume needs so your son would probably need black and another color in the brown family but initially just black would be fine. Tap isn’t required for guys until sophomore year but he may want to have them on hand in case the opportunity or need arises. Partnering classes don’t start until junior year and a good dance sneaker or character/stage shoe is fine for that.

The cirriculum for MT shows that tap starts in the Spring term of your Freshman year. I asked the same question about shoes and was told to wait until they get on campus and have their classes before buying shoes to make sure they get the correct things. My son has never had formal training, but has some of the tie up jazz shoes and beginner level tap shoes. I am sure we will have to buy everything from scratch.

Yup, you are absolutely right, tap starts spring semester freshman year and continues fall semester sophomore year. That’ll teach me to rely on my increasingly overloaded memory  .

I had a couple questions if you (or anyone else) could be so kind to help me:

1) My son is going to be a Freshman Acting major (who will seek to Minor in MT) and he has the tap, jazz and ballet shoes but he has a question about dance wear. He noticed Male Dance majors are expected to wear the classic black tights and t-shirts for ballet and the other dance classes but there is no mention for MT and other students. I presume there is the same requirement the same for MT and Acting students taking dance classes?

2) Is there anywhere to get course syllabus on-line…haven’t been able to find it so there doesn’t seem a way to order books early?

3) There is a big packet for all the campus jobs…Any advice on work study or regular jobs in the area that are better suited for Acting and MT majors given their schedules?

I’ll try to help with your questions:

I wouldn’t worry about the dance wear for the MT minor at this point. Your son will need to apply and audition for the MT minor as a sophomore so he will have plenty of time to figure out what he needs for dance classes. As an acting student, he will have movement classes and you should have received from the acting program suggested clothing for those classes.

UARts has a website called sakai which is accessible from UArts website. It contains a student’s courses and professors post syllabi and other course info (often including clothing requirements). Your son needs to set up his access permissions by going to the UArts myportal link found on UArts home page. UArts is moving from an Exchange based platform to a gmail applications based platform so specific sites may be in transition but I believe all of that has been completed. Have him go to the myportal link to set up his access if he has not already done so. I would not worry too much about buying books in advance. There are few traditional text books used and to the extent that a specific book from a specific publisher is needed, the school bookstore generally has enough copies. There are also major chain book stores like Borders and Barnes and Noble 5-10 minutes walking from the Terra Building. Acting students will be reading a load of plays, most of which are generally available. On occasion, my daughter, who is a MT major, has also used Amazon, especially for hard to find plays that would have to be ordered anyway, and has had them express delivered (an additional cost, but still cheap compared to book costs in “traditional” majors). If he feels a real desire to have his books in advance, again, look on sakai.

As to employment, I don’t have much experience with the scheduling of on campus jobs because my daughter’s employment has been off campus week end work. Whether it is on campus or off campus, the key, of course, is flexibility in scheduling to permit time at night for studio based practicing, other home work, and later down the road, auditions and rehearsals for school shows. In general, given the work load, I think weekend work is preferable, particularly for freshmen who will have a period of adjustment to the rigors of a BFA program. Between on campus and off campus, there are lots of jobs to be had.

Thanks MichaelNKat. We are aware of the tryout for the MT minor is after his first year but my son is taking tap and ballet as electives during his first Freshman semester so that’s why I asked. He will probably just error on the side of having the classic black tights and white t-shirts for the guys (the same as the dance majors are required to have) for the ballet class. Looked at the Sakai site…thanks for that; I think it will be useful when the teachers start populating it with info.

It’s worth a call about the ballet attire- as they may not require non dance major males who are raw beginners to do the tights/dance belt/tee shirt look. That takes an extra measure of confidence which is a lot to ask of a new guy. Lots of very experienced guys wear black sweats with the white tee shirt (with short socks and slippers) elsewhere at quality dance schools for class and save the tights for performances so I’d ask. Dance majors are a whole different category of human being! :)

Just got the scoop from my daughter. For ballet, guys should wear a dance belt, black tights, white tee shirt. For tap, whatever is comfortable and allows easy movement.

For very practical advice on the above mentioned dance attire, see “So You Want to Dance on Broadway” by Tina Paul. Give it to any dancer or would be dancer, but the guys really need this. Before a first ballet class.

My daughter will be starting as a Freshman MT this Fall. Can someone tell us what the girls are expected to wear for their ballet and jazz classes?

Black tights and leotard, ballet shoes, hair in bun and no jewelry (rings, necklaces, bracelets hanging or dangling earrings) for ballet. Black jazz pants, black leotard, jazz or hip hop shoes and no jewelry for jazz.

Thank you for this information. We truly appreciate all of the guidance that you offer!
