Dangerous/Sketchy Areas in LA

First off, yes I’m aware that I could have found this information on a tourist site by running a quick Google search, but I just wanted to hear it from students firsthand.

What are some sketchy areas in LA county? When students head off-campus, where do they normally go, and is it common for students who go off-campus to go into/near any of these dangerous or sketchy areas?

Was thinking of asking a similar thing. I’m going to Dodger Stadium soon, and would like to ride my bike there. Is there any neighborhood I should avoid midday?

Avoid Compton for sure

Stay away from USC!

I’m not just saying that because I’m going to UCLA, but the general area around USC and the LA Coliseum is too be avoided at night or alone.

Hmm, as a big city Los Angeles is pretty sketch anytime at night, anywhere.

I would avoid South Los Angeles like… anytime though.

*unless you are going with a group I mean.

If you just stay on Sunset it should be fine.

You want to ride your bike from UCLA to Dodger stadium? FYI that takes like 2 hours by bus. And buses go faster than bikes…

I know… Current plan is to leave around 9 AM, stop off at The Grove for a quick lunch and then get to a 1:00 game. Google maps says 16 miles, but I don’t know if it’s a safe 16 miles.

You should consider taking the bus. Are you going to ride 16 miles back to UCLA?

Compton is not as bad as you think in the daytime. Depends on which side of the city you are on.

dinoian- oh my gosh! that sounds so fun! I am kinda scared to ride my bike in LA though… LA drivers are crazy! The light will be red and at least 3 cars go through it… Be careful!!

no, ride one way, bus back. How often do the bike racks on the buses fill up?

A dangerous neighborhood is one where you are literally the only white person on the bus.

(This has happened multiple times to me - all near USC, of course).

^^yes, black and brown people are just SO damn scary. obviously, white people=safe.

A SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

I’ve been the only white person on a bus plenty of times in West LA. That was a stupid post.

It was pretty miserable waiting for the bus after the Dodgers lost in the NLCS last year though.

If you want to ride your back just make sure you have one of those red flashy thingies on the back so drivers will see/avoid you. I dont think there are any problems on the west side of LA. I’ve gone for runs on routes that have everything from liquor stores to cemeteries at night and no one has ever hassled me.

avoid U$C and its South Central LA ghetto.

but West LA around UCLA campus is generally safe…

Good, I’m glad we agree on something! Never mind that my best friend is black. So obviously TheHutt = teeheracists!!!1!!!11!!

your best friend is black.

obviously, obviously, you’re not racist.

I mean, obviously.

black best friends=absolution of racism

In all fairness, gang activity/robbery is usually concentrated in poorer areas and statistically African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely to live in these areas. However, this obviously doesn’t mean that just because an area has a lot of minorities that you will be mugged.
