Daria

Anyone remembers that show? Well I never actually watched it when it was on TV, but I recently discovered it on Youtube [although the bastards took it all off recently! (but it can still be found on dailymotion)].

Anyway, what do you think of her as a character? I’m not sure what to make of her. It’s as if her nihilism is just a protective shell, and when she comes out of it, for whatever reason, she’s totally lost. Like the time when she gets contacts and begins to care about people thinking that she actually cares about her appearance, or the time when the football player dies and she becomes the “misery chick”… I’d say it’s just to show that she’s just a teenager like everybody else, but I want to hear what you people think.

I loved Daria! I used to come on MTV when I was like eight. That show introduced me to sarcasm, seriously. As for Daria guarding her true feelings behind nihilism, I don’t think she really did that. Maybe that’s just who she really was, though I find it hard to believe that someone could feel so pessimistic about today’s world… Daria was a psychological anomaly; the whole show totally emphasized that. Like in the opening theme song when they showed her reading a newspaper during a funeral. She always had that bored expression on her face and talked in that monotonous tone. It was like nothing could phase her. This was probably the major reason that I was drawn to the show.
