Dartmouth is supposedly in the middle of a forest somewhere in New Hampshire. Is campus life really fun, or is it close to a cool city that people can go hang out in? I want to be somewhere in or near a culturally vibrant place. Is Dartmouth the place to go?

If you’re thinking culturally vibrant as in a big city, Dartmouth is not what you’re looking for. When students leave campus it is generally more for hiking, camping, etc. and not for enjoying Hanover. That said, the actual campus of Dartmouth is supposed to be really great and enjoyable, with lots going on, because of the lack of other city opportunities.

it’s very good

Depends on what you mean by “culturally vibrant.” Do you want to go clubbing and a ton of concerts or do you mean fine arts and high-brow culture? Because Dartmouth offers a ton of opportunities for students-watching the Met’s operas to working with professional artists in studios (I even heard a rumor that Christo and Jeanne-Claude are going to be the artists-in-residence this spring) to lecture-but very few students take advantage of the opps. Pace of life on campus is ridiculously fast that its hard to make it to everything you want. Even if we were close to a city, we prob wouldn’t have time to go anyway.

If you want the opportunities an urban environment offers for your college years, don’t go to Dartmouth.
The reality is that most Dartmouth and other elite school graduates will live their working lives in major cities and their environs. The environment Dartmouth (and Williams, Princeton etc.) offers is a chance to bond with other smart people your age in a concentrated, almost socially insistent way. A bubble, but an amazing one at that. No accident that the mentioned schools have very, very high alumni giving rates.

Uh – Jean-Claude just died, like a month ago.

But Dartmouth is awesome.

Not what you’re looking for.

I know Jean-Claude died, this was the summer before that.

it’s not in the middle of no where. it’s in the middle of montreal, boston, and burlington (home place of ben and jerry’s ice cream!!!)
