Dartmouth Outing Club Questions

What is the leisurely hiking trip like? Is it relatively comfortable or is it really like living in the wild? How are the restrooms, etc.

What is the swim test like? What do we have to do for it, and how are groups for the swim test organized?

Also, anyone else with questions should ask too.

On your Leisurely Hiking trip you will be exploring the trails in the mountains of New Hampshire. You’ll be staying at one of the DOC’s cabins and hiking in the surrounding woods each day. In addition to a daypack, you should bring a large pack to carry all your gear during the short hike into the cabin. Remember, in addition to your personal gear you will have to carry a share of your group’s food and group equipment, so leave some room for this gear and don’t overload with non-essentials. Pack your bathing suit and towel at the top of your pack—you will need these when you arrive in Hanover for the swim test. Plan to wear the same shorts and t-shirt for the trip, saving a dry shirt to sleep in and a change of clothes for Moosilauke Ravine Lodge.

Swim Test - Students are encouraged to take their swim test prior to their DOC trip in the fall. Otherwise, the test must be passed during recreational swim hours under the supervision of the lifeguard on duty. Exemptions from this requirement must come from the medical director of the college in the form of a permanent medical excuse. If a student is unable to complete the 50 yard swim, he or she may fulfil this requirement by successfully completing a course in beginning swimming. This course may not count towards the 3 credit requirement.

If you don’t take the swim test before your DOC trip, it is no big deal. However, you do have to have it done before you graduate.

I have a messed up arm from a car accident, so do I actually need to get a doctor’s note or can I just choose to take the test later?

You can take the test any time in your Dartmouth career

oooo, they just “recommend” you take it before DOC but you can just choose not to?

D is a rising junior and has not done it yet. At the rate she is going she will be one of those people coming from the pool throwing on her gown to attend graduation.

In Leisurely you will probably be living in cabins and have access to outhouses, but keep in mind you may indeed be *****ting in the woods or sleeping under the stars.

The night before you leave, your DOC trip will go down to the pool with everyone else. You’ll stand around the edge for a while, then a guy with a clipboard will ask your name and tell you and your group to jump in and swim to the other side and back, a new person starting every 5 seconds or so. It’s pretty orderly and is over quickly.
