Dartmouth Parents Thread

There is another option for graduation week. Our son is a senior. We’ve rented a house for the week of graduation in Quechee Lake- it cost something like $1200, sleeps 8, and is about 10 minutes from Hanover. Grandparents, older siblings, etc. can all stay with us and enjoy a week in VT.

Hi Parents…when do you see your kids next? Daughter wants me to go this month; then Thanksgiving. She can’t go that far on Thanksging with finals right after (I believe they end Dec.8th). Just cuirous…I am a plane ride/rental car away. Are some of you waiting until they get the winter break? They have many busy weekends, with bonfire, etc. (I think her getting sick made her more homesick)…just curious.

I am going to see D the weekend before Homecoming arriving late Friday leaving midday Sunday. I am in California and am on the east coast occasionally, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. So this will be my visit for this term.

Had breakfast with daughter on Saturday and will do so again in 2 weeks. Was wonderful just to have the brief time with her.

LHornmomof4, yes, our boys really hit it off, had lunch and talked for hours. My S has a twitter account and updates us, and some friends at his convenience. Seems to work for him and we don’t feel the need to call as much. You might suggest that for him, its pretty interesting to see their perspective on things as they happen.

I am going to suggest to the Dartmouth alums here to host something. Dartmouth is not well known out here except by people who spent time back east. I think it is perfect for students who want the college town experience.

Right now, he seems to be settling in, attending athletic events, performances at the Hop, and studying at Baker. He twittered and informed the world that he is drinking coffee now to help him stay alert and read…I guess you have to start sometime.

Wish we could visit him before next April, but we are happy that he keeps his posted. We have fun checking the Dartmouth Flickr site to see if we can spot him in the crowds. You might want to see if you can look at the larger file versions and pick out your kids. And thanks for all of your support by keeping this thread alive. I had no idea that being a Dartmouth parent would be so fun. Happy October.

My D mentioned some kids had met up w/parents. The bonfire weekend/halloween is probably hard weekend to be there, hotels booked/kids have plan. I wonder how many will be on campus for Thanksgiving? Probably the foreign students, etc. and those far away.
Oh well, I will see what I can do with work, etc. I took a week off to go bring her there…

Good to hear your kids are doing well. I started Facebook, I’m not sure if D has twitter. Do you both have to have twitter to get I guess “tweeted”…

Have a great day…

Another option for graduation - stay in the dorms. I don’t know thi for a fact, but I think they will continue to offer a limited number of dorm rooms - see this from 2010: <a href=“Home | Office of Residential Life”>Home | Office of Residential Life;

We were put up in the new dorms - decent enough accomodations if you don’t want to commit far in advance, and you can’t beat the price. However, we had to vacate Sunday afternoon. That works if you are able to pack up and leave on Sunday and then just find a place far from town enroute to home.

Hey parents of '14s, do you know where your kids are? The ultimate game for helicopter parents, apologies to Where’s Waldo…

Everyone should "like"The Dartmouth on Facebook!
The Dartmouth is the daily newspaper on campus and the most popular publication.
It gives a sense of what happens on campus which is invaluable for applicants.

Thanks mildredhongers, I also follow TheDartmouth on the web [TheDartmouth.com | America’s Oldest College Newspaper. Founded 1799.](http://thedartmouth.com/) where you can subscribe and get email updates. The Dartmouth is also on Twitter. DartmouthNow and Dartmouthsports are also on the web and on Twitter if you want instant updates. It’s almost too much information for this helicopter parent to bear… I’m sure it will wear off me by the time he is a Sophmore…I hope.

Thanks…I saw the Convacation/other photos. I tried to save it but had issues. I will definitely sign up for the newpape online. Also need to add Twitter.

No D Parent’s lately. Did anyone receive any info on care packages? Swimming had sent out a package that they can send care packages for Halloween, etc. Anyone else here about any other types of services like that from prior years?

I hear the first mid term for Calc is this week…seems that some have 2 midterms and final.

Have a great weekend!

I will probably be at Dartmouth the first week in November. I’ll be in Boston on business and may have time to drive out to Hanover for a dinner with my daughter. (Hope it’s not snowing!)

For dinner, I highly recommend Simon Pearce in Queechee Gorge, VT. Ask for a table overlooking the dam.

^^I’ve seen that place when we were driving around VT after freshman drop off, but it looked packed for lunch so we ate elsewhere.

Hi, I just wanted to ask what the usual size dimensions of the laptops brought to the school are… I know the school sells macs, but for the people who buy independently, what are the size dimensions? Thanks.

My student bought one on campus, I think they will service them that way if something happens.

I’ve seen a lot of 13" MacBook Pros. Some 15s. Few 17s.

I’m going to have to remember the Simon Pearce recommendation for a finer dining choice–I assume that’s what it is? What is the menu like? It would also be nice to do some exploring in VT, since I’ve never gone beyond White River Junction.

We’ve eaten at Mollie’s, the Dirt Cowboy, Jesse’s, the Salt Hill Pub, the Thai place, the Canoe Club, the Hanover Inn (brunch), and the other place near the Dirt Cowboy (Jake’s?). Never made it to Lou’s, and now that I can’t eat carbs in any quantity I guess I never will. (:

When I make a flying visit to pick up or drop off S we always end up eating in or taking out from the Jewel of India, since we both love Indian food.

Good to hear of a few more places, including Jewel of India. I happened to pick up a flyer at the hotel of Simon Pearce, they may have a website. Looks very nice…then I found the website.

Computers: My daughter did the apple 13 inch…easier to carry. One 2012 working in admin. mentioned when she was in Paris on study abroad her webcam broke, they replaced the entire screen/webcam at no charge. The ones they buy thru school—I beleive are covered for 3-4 yrs. THe non-Apples have a little better coverage.
