According to the longer-timers, the Jewel has gone down hill over the past few years.

The big disappointment in town is the closing of Ben & Jerry’s…the local proprietor could not afford B&J franchise fees.

We dined at Simon Pearce on our college tour visit several years ago. A beautiful setting. Make sure you go downstairs and watch the glass blowers. We also dined at the Quechee Inn at Marshland Farm in Quechee. Surprisingly good. We ventured to Woodstock Vermont and walked around, but did not dine anywhere there. There are several covered bridges in the area which are nice to see. Enjoyed Lou’s, Molly’s and Yama’s in Hanover. Liked Dirt Cowboy individual brewing for coffee. There are a couple other places in Hanover which we hope to try in April if time permits.

I don’t know whether the Jewel has gone downhill, but I would say it is a pretty typical decent-not-great Indian restaurant. The dish descriptions tend to be a bit lacking, and I’ve found that it helps if you are familiar with Indian cooking and can therefore figure out what things might actually be in advance. :)

Re: Care Packages. I used the Swim Team Care Packages for 3 years. They are delivered by a member of the swim team. Loved supporting a sport and having a student deliver goodies to my child’s door. If I sent an care package it was often left sitting for a week or more. You can even write them a note which I really liked.

Thanks. infrmdmom…we got that in the mail and wondered. My student doesn’t like candy too much…seems to want the money for AE online ordering.

Hi Parents…question on internships at D. If they apply for a posted internship, do they typically get paid? The posted internship doesn’t state it.

MCK, sorry, don’t know the answer to internships. BTW, did do the swim team fundraiser for study packages, athletic teams do this at Wellesley too, so D gets surprise packages now and then too. I am keeping a low profile with S as he has some tests and papers due, he needs to focus, so for now, no replies to his twitter feeds. Good thing I didn’t quit my day job.

Yes, D mentioned they have math mid term.

OK Dartmouth parents, change of topics slightly. THE EMPTY NEST, if it applies to you, or even if you still have some kids in tow, how are you handling it?

I bring this up because this past weekend we volunteered at Ironman for the 15th year in a row, but it was the first time we did not volunteer in separate areas because of kids, or do it solo because there was a competing school event. We spent the entire time together, spouse to spouse, no intervening or interfering responsibilities brought on by kids. It was a very unusual situation for us. Because we were with 2 other newbie empty nesters, it became a topic of discussion. Yes, we missed having the kids around in the hotel and volunteer areas, but someone made a comment, “This is kind of nice” and BAM, it occurred to us that this was how it was going to be, hopefully for a long time. We all looked at each other and smiled. We realized that our journey as mates had begun again, we realized why we married in the first place. It was the start of something new, but with a bit of deja vu, memories of a time where we looked forward to spending time with each other after work and during the weekends. We held hands as we walked. We were back in OUR moment, something that left us when the first child was born. Amazing grace.

Yep. Going through the same transition. Son is 12 at Dartmouth and daughter is 14 at Occidental. Going to concerts and hockey games together. Taking sunrise hikes in the mountains. Eating dinner together. Now we are planning a two week vacation together. We had been in mom and dad mode for so long that it is great to be back at husband and wife mode. The kids will always need us but fortunately the love and want to be together has continued.

For the summer of my daughter’s freshman year she did a paid internship at an art gallery in manhattan. For winter term of her junior year she did a paid 10 week work/study internship at an observatory in chile (she majored in art history and physics/astronomy). For summer of her junior year she did an unpaid internship at the metropolitan museum of art in manhattan. the benefits of attending a school like dartmouth are amazing.

So glad to hear about happy parents and internships. As single parent, somewhat different…only child also, but we are getting thru it. Actually did many events (wine tasting, Octoberfest, etc.) and D is very busy at D.
~
Keene NH-- bus? The punkin festival is this Saturday. Anyone know if there are buses or rides to that area? It is around 60 miles to Keene. Just curious to see if anyone knows.

RedondoDave, Hey, our kids are the same age. You are my new role model. Sunrise hikes in the mountains (San Gabriels?) beats sunset walks on the beach (too cliche, besides that is the best time to have dinner). We are planing trips now too and we look forward to some quality time together that suits our tastes. Time certainly flies, and we appreciate that we still want to spend time together.

My son has had a few paid opportunities. This past summer he had a paid internship at a biotech company nearby in NH. He was also once a TA (teachers assistant) in an engineering class at D that paid pretty well.

That is great to hear. My D is in the process of applying for an internship, but it takes some time. They don’t seem to award it until the next quarter.

My son is a junior and just got a paid internship on campus for research. He is also now waiting to hear where he will go for Winter quarter for an internship. He has made great relationships with some professors and looking forward to the winter quarter in Washington DC or elsewhere.

I heard that internships at Dartmouth are a great way to maximize the D-plan schedule. S plans to spend the next winter quarter somewhere, and is also looking at DC. Good luck to all and keep us posted.

My S has an unpaid internship in Washington DC this Winter Term.

Consolation, did Dartmouth help or supply housing for the internship in DC?

No. I hope that S will get it together to apply for some financial assistance for the term.
