Dartmouth Parents Thread

Thank you, Dave! That’ll be a huge help!

Check out the webcams, warm-weather D parents. It’s beautiful in Hanover today!

Wow, that is a lot of snow falling! But yes, it’s beautiful.

S found a sublet in Arlington through Craig’sList.

Congrats to your kids. Sounds like some great opportunities in DC. Are they Freshman? Did they hear about opportunities thru their majors? D has to look into some things for this summer. Thinking premed, so she would like to get ahead in summer by taking a class or 2, or do some internship/research.

My son is a junior and is using his free quarter provide by Sophomore Summer. Yes, he got the internship through his major. Your student should check with his/her favorite prof or advisor during Sophomore year. My son did not declare until then and went with a double major. He did a study abroad his Winter term of Sophomore year so he only spends two winters in Hanover. He is interning for two very dynamic individuals. One is an international fellow from China and the other is an Air Force officer.

Congrats, glad to hear there are opportunities. My D is Freshman and plans to do something similar with study abroad, etc… She is trying to figure out what to do Freshman summer…maybe class or internship. Would love it if she were closer to home, but it depends on opportunities. Did any of your students do summer programs Freshman summer? To go to med school, seems like mostly everyone does research, internships, etc.

PS: Have any of your students ever lived in Boston/found housing there in summer to take a summer class / internship? Any take any premed summer classes/internships/programs.

I think your D needs to check with her advisor to see what courses the school will accept from another school’s summer program. This happened to my D who is at another school.

On another note, a very interesting article about a '14 here:

[TheDartmouth.com: Kamkwamba adapts to College life](http://thedartmouth.com/2011/01/13/news/kamkwamba/)

I know she talked to an advisor, I guess some do Harvard’s summer class. We will have to see. She is also looking into internships, etc. She’s been pretty swamped with starting a internship at D, and classwork, and other commitments, so I thought I would do some searching online.

Nice story, my D told me about this student.

Do many parents go to this Winter Carnival? Just curious. I need to visit once between now and parent weekend. Sadly D will not be here for spring break…

Never been there for Winter Carnival. S is a senior.

IMHO, no. Winter Carnival is amateur weekend in Hanover. Lots of imports arrive making for a whacky weekend. I must admit that I have not been to a Winter Carnival for a year or two+++ myself, so perhaps things have changed, but I cannot imagine a scenario where either you or your s/d want you in Hanover that weekend.

I’ll have to find a weekend to visit; D wants me to come at some point…with only a 10 week term & so much going on, it hard to pick. D is going on an ASB and since she wouldn’t see me until the summer wanted me to come up for a visit. I’ll just watch for plane specials… Have a great weekend everyone.

Cars in NH; did any of your students buy a car/register a car in NH? D will need one this summer and have to look into it. Just wondered your thoughts? She has had a lic out of state; I think you can still register one in NH. My only kid, so haven’t been thru this before.

Is there any other reason a student may need higher limits (if they really don’t have assets).

If easier to PM me, that is fine.

I went to Winter Carnival when I was a student at another school. I wouldn’t pick that weekend to show up as a parent. :D

S spent Fall term abroad sophomore year. I know a kid who spent the freshman/summer term abroad, which would actually have been perfect for S’s language studies, but he would have had to apply in advance of when he was ready to do so. S’s major obviously had a lot to do with his getting his internship, but it wasn’t through the department.

Thunderstorms/rain all MLK day here in our city…hope all is well with D Parents.

Consolation, good to know. I know D mentioned that some parents were there on the homecoming weekend…so wasn’t sure.

D plans to do Sophomore Winter abroad, and at least 1 other. She did want Fall term, since I think Rush goes on then… Now we are looking into getting her a car for summer work/internship. Did your son have a car at D? Trying to see if my D can register one on her own in NH.

No car at D or elsewhere. It isn’t necessary for S. It is true that there have been times when it would have been convenient for him, notably in having a summer job at the Rassias Institute, but most of the time it just isn’t an issue.

Fall is the major rush term, but S was away his sophomore Fall Term and pledged during Winter Term instead. I don’t know whether that affected his choice of fraternity or not…certainly, one in which he had earlier expressed some interest fell by the wayside, and I gather they didn’t pledge anyone Winter Term, but S says he didn’t go there that term and I don’t think he was really a fit there.

Parents who are alums may be more likely to be around on Homecoming weekend…

…good to hear it is possible; so your son was there a few years w/o a car. Not sure what my D will do this summer, she needs to start applying for something. There is no mass transit where we live…
Have a great day.

Dartmouth home page says it’s going to get very cold this weekend. Hope everyone is warm, has hats and gloves, and stays indoors!
