Dartmouth Parents Thread

Yeah, but the big difference is you have to go after the tree. By contrast, the shark can come after you.

(And if she makes the final cut for Ski Patrol, Magnum, she’ll be able to keep an eye on your son!) Thanks for the smiles guys, I will make a deal with you garnets, if she keeps on eye on him on the slopes, I will have him keep her safe from landsharks, which, I’ve heard, are always lurking on frat row…cheers!

Happy New Years to everyone. Hoping 2011 is a happy and healthy year for all.

It’s a deal, Magnum! It’s the landsharks I’m worried about!

Son and GF and other friend are going back tomorrow. DH is driving (thank goodness it’s not me – 3 1/2 hours each way doesn’t make me happy when I do it during one day). I’m sad. He’s a senior. Not much more time having him home over the holidays.

That’s what I’m feeling too. My son is home on his last big vacation and after graduation he’s off to a real job far away. I’m really enjoying just hanging out, but this will be the last time. It is sad, but life.

Son flew to DC last night for a three month internship. He was nervous and excited at the same time. These months could really mold him and his career. A professor has set up some meetings for him with various agencies. New experiences, new people, new world. He said he will make it up to D for Winter Carnival.

OK, he’s off again, and the empty nest is quiet. Garnets, I told my son about your deal and he laughed. He said he is not keen on the frat scene either. Maybe swap some ski lessons for bodyguard services. He has never skied so, we will see how he takes to snow.

For you parents with upper classmen, I hope the Dartmouth experience gets your kids the opportunities we all hope and dream about. I will wait. 11 quarters to go. Enjoying the ride though.

…been absent …out and about with D. She heads back this AM, early flight. It was a good Christmas, we travelled around. One of the coldest in FL, but we had a great time. Not sure when we will see each other, since she is doing an Alternative Spring Break…but I will be there for Parents weekend=== so far away, probably will go for a visit mid-way. Great 2011 to all.

I’m anticipating not seeing S until graduation in June. I expect he will be going to GF’s home over spring break. Weird.

Happy New Year to everyone! I took S to airport at 5:30 am this morning. He has arrived in Boston and is apparently heading to the shuttle. We had a nice visit. The holidays are even more fun when kids come home! Earlier this week he seemed to be a bit sad to leave his high school friends again but by yesterday was excited to return to his new friends and the snow.

I noticed that the students need to turn in their schedule (on and off campus) for next year, in April. I mentioned this to my son, so that he would start considering his options. His current preference is to remain on campus all 4 quarters. I know that his opinion my change after this quarter, but do many sophomores stay for the entire year? He is a younger freshmen and would like to earn a B.E. in Engineering, which could be 5 years. Any thoughts from experienced parents? Or conversations other 14s have had?

I am looking forward to a few visits to Hanover. A friend and I are planning a trip to NY and Hanover to visits our kids. Also my husband will take S2 to visit S1 along with a few other colleges. And we are both looking forward to parents weekend!

Our daughter ('14) is looking at several international programs for Fall and Winter of next year. From what she told us over the break, a lot of her friends are planning on being away part of next year as well. It actually seems very exciting to be able to have two quarters away in different locales - a great aspect of the D plan!

LHorn, DS, a '10. did five terms in a row beginning Sophomore Fall and ending Junior Fall. Very exhausting and he would not recommend it. Many of his friends were gone Sophomore Winter. They seemed to have paced themselves better. WE have a newly accepted "15 and will encourage Sophomore and Junior winter away from Hanover.

DD '14 arrived on campus this afternoon after an AM flight to BOS. I’m sure she’s glad to be back, although this term will start a lot faster than the fall term when she arrived two weeks early for her DOC trip and orientation. It was great to have her home for a few weeks.

S’s JetBlue flight from LA last night was delayed so he missed the first Dartmouth Coach had to wait 3 hours for the next available Coach. But he said there were several DC students on the flight. He text to tell me he is pretty much settled back in and happy to be back. Pretty cool to watch him disembark on the 1966 Webcam. We probably won’t see him until Family weekend. I am looking forward to seeing how he adjusts this quarter. For all you parents with kids that ski and board, I hope they still go to class this quarter. My friend who is an alum told me he received his worst grades winter quarter because he would try and ski everyday.

S will be leaving tomorrow for an internship in DC. It looks like I’m going to be driving him…10+ hrs each way. Argh. But an opportunity for conversation, anyway.

My S is subletting an apt. How did your arrange housing? I confess that I cannot imagine him getting up and dressed and shaven and showered and to an office by 9AM every day…all I can do is hope. :D

I found some website that rents to interns for a short term. He got in a rowhouse on Capital Hill for three months. He starts tomorrow. He is so excited. He called me yesterday as he sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial saying how great this city is and how much energy the city has. This will be different than his study abroad last winter. He solely is on his own. His professor that helped with getting the internship has also set him up with contacts on various agencies. I hope he takes advantage of this great opportunity.

That sounds awesome, Dave! My D, a '14, thinks she wants to spend a semester in DC as well. Would you mind sharing the rental website? I’ve heard it’s tough to find places in DC short-term. My D loves the energy of that city.

Was housing arranged through WISH[/urlā€>http://www.internsdc.com/]WISH ?

He used this website to get his housing. It on Capitol Hill. He arranged with the landlord direct.
