Dartmouth Parents Thread

what time you all meeting at?

Would love to go but S isn’t a freshman. Looking forward to visiting this
summer! Again, hope everyone has a wonderful time. It really warmed up
today!

We are on our way to the airport now! Ironically it is warmer in Hanover right now (69) than Houston (63). I don’t think this happens very often. We can’t wait to see our son and all of you and your sons and daughters.
Magnum, what time are we all getting together?

Aloha LHornmomof4 and '14 parents, hope to see you at Collis Cafe at 6 pm Friday for a short meet & greet. PM me when you arrive and I will wave. Busy schedule on tap, so bring your walking shoes. Son just sent a text, “Bring me some shorts!”

Hope all you sophomore parents are having a great time. The weather here is Maine is gorgeous today: sunny, breezy, and springlike. It’s usually about the same in Hanover.

Wow, it’s beautiful in Hanover. Sunshine, blue skies, puffy white clouds. Families everywhere. Had a great meet up with Lhornmomof4 and ran into Dumbo11 and another member. Attended a bunch of sessions on the college, including a great tour of Rauner special collection. Listened to many talented acapella groups
Watched football, baseball sweep a double-header from Dartmouth. Was hosted by a group from Parents and Grandparents of Dartmouth
ate at a great restaurant in White River Junction “Elixer” what a surprise. Spent a bunch of time with S and met many of his classmates. Learned much about life as a DC freshman. A happy and intense bunch. They are truly impressive. President Kim gave a nice welcome talk this morning. There is hope for the world. Aloha, -MPI

oops. I meant Dartmouth swept Harvard in Baseball

It was nice to meet you Magnum and LongHornMom. Also having a great time in Hanover. They did a great job planning the weekend. So much to do, not enough time. We have been busy going from one fun activity to the next. So much fun to meet daughter’s friends. The kids are sooo happy here. Hate to go home this morning.

Another great sunny and warm day in Hanover. The Green was filled with students trying to tan. Dumbo11, it was fun to find out that your D and Longhornmomof4’s S were already friends. Getting ready to have dinner at Simon Pearce, and then move on to D’s campus in Wellesley. Oh to be young and in college.

Enjoy Simon Pearce! I hope you get a tour of the factory. And, of course, you must buy something (besides dinner)!

We have returned to Houston. It is now much warmer and considerably more humid than Hanover. We had a fantastic weekend! We enjoyed the scheduled activities, particularly hearing President Kim speak. I cannot imagine a more inspiring leader. And if course we really enjoyed seeing Magnum and Dumbo!

We enjoyed dinner at Simon Pearce with S’ roommates and their parents. We agree that it is delicious and a beautiful place to eat. Also, upon a recommendation much earlier in this thread we enjJewel of India

Trying to type on my phone while riding in the car (not driving)! Lous was also tasty.

We were very impressed with all of the students we met. What a bright and articulate bunch!

Now we are looking forward to sophomore summer!
Not that I want to wish my S’ college years away. I know it will go too quickly. I can’t believe their first year will be over in 5 weeks.

^^D is a '13, so sophomore summer parents visit is coming up for us this summer. Anyone who has already been have any pointers or tips that are specific to sophomore summer?

Your student, and the class, will likely have everything planned all out for you - but wow summer can be so beautiful in Hanover so enjoy! Make sure to bring hiking shoes!

I too am sad that Family Weekend is over. I wish I could have met up with the CC parents at Collis, but I arrived later than expected to Hanover. Aren’t we lucky to have our kids go to such an amazing college? I learned so much about the college, the campus, and the kids, and the weather was perfect. I can’t believe that they’ll be done with Freshman year in a little over a month.

During the Sophomore summer weekend we stayed at the Chieftain motel, which is a mile or so up the river. One great virtue was their swimming pool! They are also pet-friendly and pleasantly low-key.

There was lots of interesting stuff to do, but S firmly refused to attend the karaoke event. :D

My S is looking for off campus housing very close to campus as he won’t have a car. Anyone have any ideas where to start?

DMBH18, is your S an undergrad? If so, living in a dorm is the norm. I don’t know what graduate students do. Or is he planning to stay in Hanover for the summer and not take classes? Obviously Hanover is not a huge town so the rentals are probably quite limited. I know that some kids share rental houses. Most schools have some kind of “housing exchange” notice board, either electronic or physical. I don’t know if it is possible, but he might look into renting a room in a frat house for the summer, if it is the summer that is in question.

Thanks- consolation. He is an undergrad and will be staying in Hanover in the Fall but not
taking classes so he’s looking for a room/house,etc. close to campus

Aloha all, Courer started this in April of 2010 as a support thread for parents of the new class of 2014. As of May 2, you new parents of the class of 2015 might be wondering, “what is my son or daughter getting into?” Well, this is the place where we newbie parents learned everything that we wanted to know about Dartmouth, and perhaps more. Welcome Parents of '15s! Please join us on the thread and prepare to be amazed.

(Well not really amazed, but it has been a great support thread) Simple questions about dorms, transportation, trips, weather, clothes, the Greek scene, the D-plan, the food plan, etc. are welcome
someone here should know the answer
oh, and congratulations on your child’s choice to attend Dartmouth. (Yes, I drank the Kool-aid.)
