Dartmouth Parents Thread

Here’s the link to the Parents and Grandparents fund where they give you a list of things to do in the area: [Things for Parents and Grandparents To Do at Dartmouth](http://parents.dartmouth.edu/resources/things_to_do_at_dartmouth.html)

Magnum PI, we stayed at the Days Inn in Lebanon for 2011 graduation and it was nowhere near $500 a night. More like $175 or so which, for that Days Inn, is still outrageous. Nevertheless, something to ponder.

Thanks VeryHappy! I heard 6th St. South is close to $1,000 per night for graduation. Hey, I hope your Dartmouth '11 rock star child is doing well in the real world. Please keep us parents posted as life after Dartmouth is approaching quickly.

on a sad note, son’s campus bike was lifted (again) yesterday. Last time it showed up unlocked at another dorm. I told him to get a posse together to comb the campus. This time, I think it was stolen at Thayer by a non-student because there are so few students there during the summer. We will be filing for insurance on it since we paid for insurance with [CSI College Student Insurance - Instant Quote](http://www.collegestudentinsurance.com/) On a bike, he can cross campus, or go to CVS in minutes. He likes that.

Hey GA2012Mom, my D is new to Hanover too and is at TDI for her MPH. I know the med students are super busy but if she needs a friend perhaps we can make the intro. Is she living at campus grad student housing? PM me for more info. Aloha, MPI

MPI, my D’11 is doing well. He stayed around campus for one extra term in the Fall and got a BE. He’s now working for a company in the mid-west, living with his GF, and earning a very decent amount of $$$ for a new college grad. Were not sure this is his life’s calling, but for now, he’s learning how to live like a grown up and he’s learning lots from his company, so we’re quite happy.

Courtyard by Marriott on 120 in Lebanon is/was quoting ~$460 for 2013 Commencement. We were thinking of a random visit this fall. Hanover Inn/South Street are both ~$350; Courtyard is ~250. Not cheap.

we stayed at the Quality Inn in Queeche for the '10 graduations and it was <$200/nite back then. Moreover, I didn’t make the reservations until early March and they did not require a 3/4 nite stay. But the big plus is that Simon Pearce is just down the road a bit!

White River Junction hotels tend to be more reasonable. We’ve stayed at the Hampton Inn and the Fairfield Inn, for about $150. We recently stayed at the Residence Inn on 120 for about $160, during the weekdays, but it bumped up to $260 for Sophomore weekend. One day I would like to try the Hotel Coolidge in White River Junction, a historic railway inn.

Hey bluebayou, what is your '10 up to two years out of DC?

Just started reading “Generational Bridges to the World’s Troubles” Personal stories: How Dartmouth class of '64 and the class of '14 are making a difference in the lives of others. Published May 2012. Will let you all know how it is, so far, very interesting.

literally just got home from Hanover…had an interesting gig on campus. Now looking for a job.

Hello to all of the CC DC parents. Our son is a 16 and we started packing for fall tonight.
I can’t believe it. We are in CA and both attended CA Universities, so packing for a NH school/fall/winter is a bit daunting. We are looking forward to the Sept 4th orientation and move in day. Our son will be on the G section, DOC whitewater kayaking trip. Any other parents here who are just about to launch a 16? We will be staying at the Woodstock Inn Sept 3-5th. We hope to meet some other parents.

Magnum, we stayed at the Coolidge in White River Junction for the freshman parents’ weekend. (We were on a VERY tight budget.) Part of it is officially a hostel. Our room had a half bath (toilet and sink), but you had to trek the corridors to get to the showers. No A/C, but a window fan. It’s a funky old place, adequate for us, but not for those who want modern conveniences.

As I keep saying, if you want a comfortable place that has a bit more character but also has things like A/C and cable TV, look into the Chieftain Motor Inn, just a few miles up the river. The people who run it are really nice. It also has a pool, and a buffet breakfast. We always ended up chatting with other D families in the breakfast room, including one woman who was there with us both at Sophomore Summer and at commencement.

<a href=“Chieftain Inn”>Chieftain Inn;

I am going to try the Chieftain Inn next!

I booked the Holiday Inn Express in White River Junction for the end of Sept. for $130 per night. I used Priceline “name your own price” but only ended up getting $15/per night off, but better than nothing.

Magnum, my daughter says she definitely did meet your daughter at the bar-b-que.

GA2012Mom, the world just got a little bit smaller!

Hi sunnydaysagain, My D is a '16 and will also do whitewater kayaking, though in section E. We plan to drop her off for her trip, travel to Montreal, then return to help her move into her dorm. I hadn’t thought of making a hotel reservation yet, d’oh! Seems I have to adjust my thought processes for the rural environment! HK

There’s another parent of a '16 from Colorado – perhaps we’ll meet at the alumni event in Denver this Sunday?

Hello Hard_Knocks, nice to make a connection. We are in CA, so we won’t be in Denver, but we will be in Boston on Sept. 2-3 and Hanover on Sept. 4th-5th. Can’t believe it’s less than three weeks away! We stayed at a nice B&B, The Shaker Inn, in Enfield, in October. Great breakfasts. Have a great time in Montreal! The grand Dartmouth adventure begins…for ALL of us!

Hello '16 parents! The initial drop off was the best experience yet, we toured NH and the White Mountains while our '14 Kayaked with his fellow tripees who have become his best friends at DC. Watch your son and daughter make new friends and wander campus and Hanover in a “schmob” wearing their new Dartmouth tees. If you can, stay for the Convocation. You won’t have President Kim there to inspire you, but it will be good.

Thank you Magnum PI! I spent part of the day today reading through the posts from Fall 2010 and vicariously experienced much of what all of YOU went through two years ago. I feel so many of the same feelings right now. Our son is doing the whitewater kayaking trip. I laughed when I read that you actually ended up following/passing your son’s van w/Kayaks! How hilarious for both of you. And yes, we will miss Dr. Kim. He was a big draw in our college exploration process. Such an inspirational person. I’m wondering if pres. emeritus James Wright might give the speech this year? Or will it be the acting president.

So here is a bit of sappy info…27 years ago my husband and I honeymooned in New England and stopped in at Dartmouth for lunch. We were young 20 somethings from CA and so impressed by the outdoorsy, smart, rugged kids we saw trudging in and out of the DOC that day. We said, “wouldn’t it be cool if one of our kids went to Dartmouth someday?” And now 27 years later we are flying into Boston to help son #1 move into his Fahey dorm. Amazing!
