Dartmouth Parents Thread

I wish I was going but not this year. D is on off term in NYC, but she is heading to Hanover tomorrow morning. Magnum, how nice of you to once again provide the good luck charms.

I was wearing a Dartmouth t-shirt in a restaurant in Honolulu the other day ordering take out when the cashier told me that the elderly gentlemen sitting in the back went to “my school.” I went over to him and explained that it’s really my kids’ school, and he was just so happy to talk to us and tell us how much he loved Dartmouth and that he graduated “a very long time ago.” I think he said he was 92, so perhaps the class of '42? A retired doctor. We enjoyed his company. The sweetness of Dartmouth lives on.

Enjoy Homecoming Toombs! Touch the fire! We will be watching the bonfire from the 2 webcams. Hope you can go to the game too, grab a Ti Leaf and cheer the Big Green on to pull off an upset. 5 degrees of separation. Aloha, -MPI

Dartmouth is going to need all the good luck charms it can get for the Homecoming game. Harvard is the defending Ivy League champion and perpetual league football powerhouse. Although Princeton did upset them last week, so maybe there is hope.

What an exciting evening to watch! We are on the webcams and enjoying the fire and the crowd. Good luck Big Green! Beat Harvard!

Yep, watched the webcam from time to time (still working out here) and my kids sent a great pic of them at the bonfire. Our kids are so fortunate to be at a school where traditions are treasured.

Amazing weekend. Nicest weather one could hope for in late October. Over a series of events, met 5 seniors with whom I had an opportunity to explore their career plans. All had their jobs post graduation in hand. I would have expected 1:5 to have sorted things out before the end of Fall, so 5:5 was impressive.

Think my kids missed the game due to illness. Oh well, the score says it all. Foiled again!

The bonfire was amazing, the weather was great and my son, Class of '16, was exhausted from running around the bonfire Friday night. We had an enjoyable tailgate party Saturday afternoon, meeting alums, students and parents of students. (Also, we were lucky to catch a plane home yesterday before the airlines started cancelling flights in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy.) So, a most wonderful weekend.

I’m confused about the Dartmouth Coach service next week.

I purchased a ticket online for a noon departure. The ticket/boarding pass lists the date and time.

The Coach website states, however, that no reservations are taken for the Boston service. Is this dated information? Or is my D not actually guaranteed a spot on the bus and should start waiting in line early?

They’ll keep bringing buses until everyone’s on, but if he has a tight connection at Logan, he might want to get in line to make sure of being on an earlier one.

Yes, for quarter end they send waves of buses to Boston. Just make sure your D gets there earlier. If her plane leaves in the late afternoon or evening, she should be fine. Remember, there will be holiday traffic on I-93 so make sure she has time to spare. How quickly the fall quarter passed! And for the first time they don’t have to rush back after the Thanksgiving break to cram for finals. Parents, have a great time with your Dartmouth all-stars when they return home. S always seem to grow up a bit more each time I see him.

I picked up my son at our local airport about an hour ago. After spending 3 hours in the Dartmouth coach this morning, 3 hours in the Boston airport waiting for his plane (which was delayed on several occasions), and 3 hours on the plane, he seemed to be happy to be back home, especially where the weather is in the 60’s. He was totally exhausted from his exams and his flight; however, he constantly smiled whenever he spoke of Dartmouth. I guess that we’ll now just have to wait to see if he is still smiling after he gets his grades from his first quarter at college.

Toombs61 great to hear he is smiling! Unless you are from Boston or NYC, getting to and from Hanover is an expensive and royal PITA. However, for 4 years of the Dartmouth experience. Priceless. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and debriefing period. The real fun is when you hear them comparing notes with all their other friends at different colleges. If they will let you in on the conversations. Hint, suggest he invite them over some evening. It makes all the stress and worries of the whole application process a thing of the past.

Good advise, Magnum. Right now, just about all I learn about my son at Dartmouth is what I read on his Facebook page. Beats nothing, I guess.

I hope that your kids make the long trip from NH to Hawaii in good form and that they enjoy their long holiday break in the isles of Paradise.

Mahalo and Aloha Toombs. Parents, enjoy your kids over this unprecedented long break. What a blessing, no rush this year.

On Sunday I saw a SUV carrying an xmas tree on the roof next to his surfboard. It takes us a bit longer to get in the spirit.

Happy Thanksgiving to all Dartmouth parents! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!

Thanks to the calendar change, this is the first time in four years that D has been home. Much to be thankful for … not the least the fact that I have my sous chef back to help with the prep tomorrow. Best wishes to all.

S is away for Thanksgiving and his birthday several days later for the second time since leaving for college: both times in France. I have some hope of skyping, although we should have arranged in in advance.

We are a 3-hour drive from Hanover, which I consider to be virtually the perfect college distance: far enough to be away but fairly easy to drive both ways in one day if necessary.

I am officially the proud mom of an ED student Dartmouth class 2017! I have absolutely no clue what to expect lol! Accepted today!

Congrats ctmomtop3! You should be very proud! Dartmouth is a very, very special place!
