Dartmouth Parents Thread

Thanks so very much-I’m still a little overwhelmed!! My S is over the moon! Am i in the right place btw? Should i be in a new parent forum?

You are definitely in the right place. This is a thread for all Dartmouth parents. Many that post on here have kids that have already graduated, but they still have lots to contribute. Your son is going to LOVE Dartmouth. If you have any questions, just post them here. You will get all of the help you need. Welcome to the Dartmouth family!

ctmomtop3,

Welcome to CC and the Dartmouth Parents Thread. Congrats to your son. When things wind down, have him contact admissions to see if he can attend Dimensions (Dartmouth’s admitted students days) in the spring. It is such an amazing place and yes, he will bleed green <3

Welcome aboard CTmomtop3, buckle up and enjoy the ride, it goes by quickly.

WelcomeCTmomtop3, I am fairly new as a parent as well as my D is in the medschool, but all the parents have been welcoming.

Magnum, it seems our kids are both going to the same ugly Christmas sweater party. Please all don’t flame me for this, but isn’t that what all teachers wear during the holidays? Gotta love em. :)

Hi everyone. I am relatively new to cc. Our son just got accepted to ED-Dartmouth yesterday. He is in seventh heaven and so are we. That’s been his dream school since his sophomore year. Would love to ‘meet’ other new parents through cc. Congratulations to all the kids and their parents.

Congrats Creation 123! Love to see the new parents already posting! I read over the ED threads, and it looks like the ED round was pretty brutal. Magnum, great call on advising the ED admittees to call admissions about attending Dimensions. I know they usually only guarantee housing for RD acceptees, and Dimensions is not to be missed.

Hope we can meet the new CC parents at one of Dartmouth’s big weekends!

Congratulations! My daughter just got in ED, too (Yay!!!) and we want to purchase flights for Freshmen Parents’ Weekend. Does anyone know the dates? Is it in the spring or fall? How long does the coach take from Boston to Hanover and is it much faster to drive? Also, if there are any volleyball parents on here, do you have next year’s vball schedule? Thank you so much. Go Big Green!!!

would love to connect with other Dartmouth parents. We live in Texas. Any other Texans here?

Yes, we are from Austin! Where do you live? There are at least two girls from Austin on the Dartmouth volleyball team. One is a freshman from Westlake High and one is a sophomore from St. Stephen’s, where my daughter is a senior.

Welcome all! Infoseeking, first year parents weekend is held during spring term, usually in late April or early May. In terms of driving vs. taking the Dartmouth Coach, it is really up to you. Driving is definitely quicker, as you can leave on your schedule and drive at your own pace. The Coach makes a quick stop at Boston South Station, then a couple other of quick stops along the way. If your child is traveling alone, the coach is ideal. Personally, we prefer to rent a car. Our daughter likes to make the trip to Walmart, as well as eat off campus. There are some lovely restaurants in Vermont. Just an idea, but while your child is on their DOC trip (which is a MUST), take some time to explore the area. The weather will be beautiful, and there are so many nice areas within driving distance. Also, Manchester is another alternative airport. It is a much closer drive (about an hour and 15 minutes) and flights are often cheaper than Boston (depends where you live).

Oh, forgot, the Coach takes between 2 1/2 and 3 hours. You can look at their schedules online. Driving takes just over 2 hours, depending on how fast you go.

We are from Dallas. I know atleast 4 other kids from Dallas area ( 2 are athletes)

Thanks for all the information @ Dumbo 11. Hope we will get some confirmation on dates so we can start planning. Being from Texas, we all will need to do some major winter apparel shopping next year.

Hello parents of '17s!! So glad to join you! My son also got his official acceptance yesterday as well. We are from Pennsylvania about 30 minutes from Philadelphia (Bucks County area). Anyone nearby? My son actually received a likely letter early November but it’s not the same as getting the actual official notice! I’m looking forward to meeting many of you as we move them in and during family weekend.

Consolation started this thread when my S ('14) was accepted RD, and it has proven to be a great support network for present and future parents. I’ve worked hard not be a helicopter parent, but there are times when I wish I was there hanging out at the Dirt Cowboy, or on the reading some books at Baker Library, hoping to casually run into him or any of his friends. But, with tuition being what it is, I kept my day job and check the Dartmouth website and Flickr site from time to time to keep the connection. It sure is nice to have him home for a longer break. He hasn’t been home in a year. We plan to go out paddle boarding tommorrow and maybe catch some waves. He needs to work on his tan.

Hey, GAMom, my D (TDI '13) will probably see your D at that party. Happy Holidays Everyone!

Parents of '17s, you can start asking questions now!

Thank you, Dumbo. Very helpful! I think we’ll rent a car and have our daughter take the coach when she’s on her own. Whenever the two local hotels are booked, where is the best convenient place to stay? I hope admitted ED students are still welcome to attend Dimensions. She could stay with former classmates or new teammates. Do you know if athletes can attend the freshman summer outing club trip? I think I remember the volleyball coach saying that they could attend part of it. Just curious. We are so excited for our lucky daughter!

Hi all, I am curious. Smuggs11 mentioned receiving a “likely” letter in November. did other recently admitted students also receive this this letter? Smuggs11, is he an athlete?
thx

No, he didn’t receive a likely letter. I wish he had- it would have reduced some of his anxiety.
I just checked the website regarding Dimensions- is it a program for prospective students or new students?

Info seeking, I believe ED kids are welcome to attend Dimensions, but they are not guaranteed housing. It is great your daughter has a place to stay. I believe that athletes can attend the DOC trips. There are many sections with different dates, so they might have to request a certain section. In terms of hotels, The Hanover Inn and Six South Street are the most convenient, but both tend to hike up rates for key dates, and they get booked full well in advance. We have stayed at the Marriott Courtyard many times. It is just a 5 minute drive, and it is clean and convenient.

Dimensions is the accepted students weekend. It is mainly directed to show RD accepted kids how great Dartmouth is. Many of these students are deciding between many great options, and Dimensions is phenomenal. Kids meet many of their future classmates, and they get to experience both the academic and social side of Dartmouth. There are lots of activities and surprises. They do a great job!

Thanks Dumbo. I am sure our son would love to attend Dimensions- any excuse to visit Dartmouth :)
